There are take down Mausers.
The picture I saw was a Mauser action with a composite sporter stock and modified to accept a scope. It was not a takedown rifle.
I just found it odd that some claim Lee Harvey Oswald used a Mauser including a rogue DPD officer who died mysteriously a short time later.
As a boy I owned the old WWI mauser with a bayonet, and at the beginning I was puzzled about the mentions of it, but the one they are talking about is just a regular modern 30-06 hunting rifle that looks like most other bolt action hunting rifles.
I saw a security video of him walking down the street. He had the butt under his shirt and the barrel down a pants leg so he walked straight legged on the right side.
Robinson's recovered rifle in evidence box at the site of recovery.
The unusual gray area on the scope and stock is a shaft of sunlight through the cover of the shaded recovery site.
The bent down bolt handle indicates the Mauser was manufactured or converted for sport hunting purposes.
Unfortunately, the photo trims the very tip of the barrel from view.
It was probably manufactured for sport hunting however, that is not certain.
They say he carried in inside his pant leg. There is an apparent video of him walking strangely down the street, one leg being quite stiff, and unable to bend at the knee.
The previous generation of gunsmiths modified old surplus Mausers and Springfields by the thousands. The goal was to make a cheap, rugged, hunting rifle. Since I never heard of a Mauser chambered in 30-06, this was likely one of those custom builds from long ago.
I say long ago because today, an original un-tampered with military rifle is worth much more than one that got “sporterized” with a shorter stock, scope, custom chambering, etc..
Old sporterized guns sell cheap now since the workmanship of the long ago craftsman is unknown. You can buy a lighter, more accurate hunting rifle out of the box right now cheaper than you can have another military based sporter built.
This looks like the gun, Mauser 18, which is manufactured in 30-06, as well as others.

I have a Remington 700 30-06 and can hit bullseyes at 200 yards, and I am just an average deer hunter.
The Mauser 66 is a commercial takedown rifle.
I thought it weird that the rifle had no sling, or at least not pictured.
What was the range and what round was used?
Believe your eyes.
People can tell you anything.
It's pristine, made in 1953, owned by an older gentleman who just bought it for its looks.
you know better... the information about the rifle that was found has been provided to the public... why are you stirring up shit on free republic?...
There were hundreds of thousands of Mauser and Springfield rifles sold as surplus after WWII. Many of them, perhaps most, ended up with “sporter conversions.” Those included cut-down or new stocks, often new barrels, and in the case of the Mauser rifles, rechambering from 8mm to 30-06 with the new barrel.
The Springfield version of the Mauser action was considered an outstanding sniper rifle in WWII when matched with a telescopic sight.
