I'm thinking of buying a firearm...the first one in 50+ years. Does anyone know if you're required to tell the insurance company that writes your Homeowner/Umbrella policy that you own one?
I don't want to be sued by someone who's shot by someone who's stolen it only to find that the company requires a gun owner to tell them that they own one...and then find that the claim is denied due to my failure. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.
It’s probably won’t cover claims. It makes sense that an insurance company wouldn’t cover a claim connected to a pit bull,a swimming pool or a gun unless you informed them that you had one. In that case they’d surely charge you a higher premium. In fact,I can see them refusing to cover any such situation...period.
If you are legally allowed to own one…and you follow the rules of the “commonwealth” you should be fine.
Obviously, don’t leave a loaded weapon laying around for a kid to pick up, and you will be OK.
That’s what I was trying to avoid.It weighs about 15 pounds.
They won’t write you a policy if you own these animals. So, it’s your choice...............

They won’t write or renew your policy for owning these animals in your home.
Swimming pool is a whole nother matter. The list of requirements was prohibitive to say the least. Not that it mattered, I never want a pool anyways. It’s a hole in the ground you pour money into, like owning a boat is a hole in the water you pour money into............
When you say, “big cat,” you mean a cat from another species besides “house cat,” right? Because I’ve got a pair of 19-pound kitties who aren’t even fat. (6 on the vet’s 1-10 Chonk scale.)
Yes,it’s unlikely...but it is possible.And of course other bad things can happen with a gun. I could use it in self defense only to be sued by the heirs of the guy I shot. If I was required to reveal my ownership and didn’t the company might say “sorry,you’re on your own”.

IME.. MOST insurance Co’s DO ask specifically about firearms.
And most WILL jack your premium.
I remember being specifically asked. Do you own Guns? Do you have any “assault weapons”?
When I asked them to define “assult weapon” they were dumbfounded.
IIRC that conversation lead down a very long rabbit hole where it was agreed that it was best to just say “no guns in the house”.
The policies might say something on this, but I greatly doubt it. But no one else can tell you what YOUR policies have buried in them. Your need to bite the bullet and read your policies (especially the liability section) and mark up anything relevant.
Homeowners policies usually have some coverage for loss of firearms to theft, with a low maximum of $2k-3k. If you want more coverage with higher limits (someone I know has $25k), you generally have to pay extra for Personal Property Coverage and, and tell the insurer what that property is.
If your firearm is stolen and you timely report that to the police and your insurer, I can’t imagine a scenario where a third party can claim damages for subsequent misuse of the firearm by criminals. Were that legally possible, scammers would have already put insurers out of business. Your insurance agent can tell you how that works in your state.

The only thing about the pool in our yard is that we need a fence (which is there anyway) and we need locks on the gates. Which were there anyway.
We took out the diving board because kids are stupid. I guess that would help with insurance.
We needed the fence to keep in our prohibited German Shepard. Oh yeah…she was a mix, a GSD/Beagle mix. Mmm-hmmm…good little mixed dog she was. LOL.

My son, a Georgia boy, currently lives in Boston due to his current employment. Gun rules are oppressive in that state. He is looking forward to his move back into the US proper this coming April. He despises Massachusetts with a passion.
I know, but failing to report a stolen gun in any state only to have it used later in a crime will automatically make your life miserable.

in MA.. if you’re not a LEO. A lost firearm in 90% of the cases will cause you to have your LTC revoked as being “unsuitable”.
Which means all of your stuff gets picked up be LEO and put into a bonded warehouse. Where you will be charged exorbitant fees until you sell them all or the bonded warehouse takes them to cover their exorbitant fees.
And once that LTC is revoked.. The expense and time to get it re-instated is astronomical.
