This is because both lifestyles promise increased health benefits by limiting meat from our diets. There are a few moral and environmental implications of these lifestyles too. Even if you do not want to give up eating meat, you could observe Independence From Meat Day as an opportunity to enjoy a different kind of diet. Give your palate a do-over and find out what life is like for vegans and vegetarians

Strap them kids in
With a little bit of vodka
In their cherry coke
We’re going to Tennessee
For the 4th of July
For the first time in years
We’re gonna have us a time ...

I had never cared to look up what a vegan was until this lady did a extended stay in my crowded household.

She stated that vegan was about no harm to animals.

That was when I asked why she pretended to eat animals with her fake beef, bacon and chicken and other stuff.

As a Messianic christian, I know that cheeseburgers can be kosher, as long as they’re not bacon cheeseburgers, and as long as no pork has been used in making them.

Nought Naw, but HECK NAW!!!

I am a 72 yr. old veteran.
During my 3 years at U-Tapao Thai Naval Air Station, in the 635th Combat Support Group, 645th Supply Squadron, War Readiness Spares Kit section, and during my assignment to base perimeter security, my “toussch of home” was the dirty water hot dog stand outside the Base Exchange, and a carton of chocolate milk. I did this , and retrieved my mail, from Oct. 1971 till June 1974.
So all y’all that want to wussify the nation’s sacred birthday, y’all just got ahead, pat yo’selves on yo’rump, andingest all that veggie stuff, and y’all can watch us enjoy whatever goodness wafts to thy nostrils.
Don’ It. Smell “Oh! It’s. Oh It’s. oh so good!

Well, I am going to abstaining from meat this Friday, but only because I am a traditionally minded Catholic, doing it as a tiny sacrifice, and as a remembrance of Good Friday.

I expect others to have hamburgers, hot dogs, BBQ, and on Saturday I will join them.

There are nutrients in meat that cannot be gotten from plant sources.

true. If you want to go vegetarian, eggs and dairy can fill the void. Fish is excellent, too. Vegan? Let's just say you might be able to fill in most of the gaps with nuts , legumes and carefully selected fruits and vegetables and do well for a while. But there is no place on earth where you could have pulled that off without 20th century levels of transportation. Even Jains consume dairy.

Independence From Meat Day is observed all across the world on July 4.

We’re having grass-fed ribeyes. Mine will be medium-rare.

That’s OK for protein, but Vitamin B12 doesn’t have many sources but beef.

Planning to roast a whole chicken in the Weber kettle.

Maybe I will skip eating any veggies or fruit at all on the 4th.

If I need something pre-dinner to stave off hunger some bacon and eggs w/cheese would be nice.

Well, there's clams and sardines. Other forms of meat (lamb, even chicken) have plenty. Some in eggs as well.

But yes. I just looked up non-animal sources of Vitamin B12. All of them "fortified". Then I asked, how are they fortified? Collecting lots of the right bacteria and putting it in products like yeast.

OK, that process is not something the pilgrims, or ancient Tibetan Monks, Bushmen, Aztecs, or Egyptian Pharoahs could have indulged in. Now I can extend my argument: how can we be meant to have a vegan diet when it wasn't possible to get all needed nutrients with one until the 20th century?

What’s funny to me is that vegan food, if it’s not basic produce, is highly processed and loaded with additives. Vegan burgers? Tofu hot dogs? Cow-free “butter”? You’ll get dizzy reading the ingredients. All these patchouli-smelling hippies filling their bodies with Leghemoglobin, genetically engineered from soy to reproduce the red juice (blood) that comes from real burgers. The hypocrisy is amazing.

I still look to the “Grandma diet”. Meat, veg, maybe a little starch like rice or potatoes, fruit for dessert, ice cream or cake as a special treat. On holidays, of course, bring out the sumptuous banquet!

Fourth of July means real meat burgers and hot dogs, maybe a big thick steak if you’re feeling fancy :-)

Michael Poulan is no conservative, but he has been championing this for years. He is also an intelligent writer worth reading on the topic. "The Omnivore's Dilemma" and "In Defense of Food" are both good reads.
