NATIONAL GARDENING DAY

National Gardening Day on April 14th encourages gardeners and would-be gardeners to pick up a shovel, plant some seeds, and kick off a beautiful year of homegrown bounty.

#NationalGardeningDay

Whether you want to grow vegetables, fruit, flowers, houseplants, or anything in between, National Gardening Day celebrates a satisfying pastime that you will enjoy for decades.

Growing your own food also provides fresh and natural nourishment for your family and saves you time and money at the grocery store.

As many gardeners know, the benefits of gardening come from more than the produce. Spending time in the garden also provides physical activity and an opportunity to join with nature.

The day is a call to action to get out and grow flower or vegetable gardens. No matter how you garden, plant in the ground, in containers, in straw bales or in a square foot gardening box. Just garden!

8 WAYS TO CELEBRATE GARDENING DAY

There are many ways that you can celebrate the day, including:

Find the right book, guide or resource for your needs at Cool Springs Press, county extension service, the local bookstore or library.

Look for a community garden in your area.

Organize a seed and perennial plant swap with neighbors and friends.

Join a garden club. There isn't one near? Start one!

Visit your local nursery or garden center—you will be amazed and excited by all the beautiful options

Visit Quarto Homes on Facebook and Instagram for more gardening information

Just like last year, I will be attempting to grow tomatoes, squash and bell peppers. This year, I’m going to also include a few flowering plants to attract bees. I need the bees to stop by and pollinate the vegetable blossoms.
I’ve tried spreading the pollen on my own in those big yellow flowers of the spaghetti squash, but the results, if any were somewhat underwhelming. This year will be different.

Plant a Garden
by Edgar Guest

“If your purse no longer bulges
and you’ve lost your golden treasure,
If times you think you’re lonely
and have hungry grown for pleasure,
Don’t sit by your hearth and grumble,
don’t let mind and spirit harden.
If it’s thrills of joy you wish for
get to work and plant a garden!

If it’s drama that you sigh for,
plant a garden and you’ll get it
You will know the thrill of battle
fighting foes that will beset it.
If you long for entertainment and
for pageantry most glowing,
Plant a garden and this Summer spend
your time with green things growing.”

I need to get a couple sprouted onions and the mint back outside but that might be all. The possums got to everything the past couple years.

Just picked up a four pack of habanero pepper plants this morning. Sowed 130 seeds into trays yesterday. I’m a month behind as usual. Need to get the beds ready over the next few days and finish the high tunnel over the next few months.

Right up my alley - although I love the "Food/Drink of the Day" postings.

It's April so everything is in bloom right now in So Cal - including everyone's allergies!

What I really want to do is replicate this. (A little fire, a lot of flavor ™)

Ingredients: Red Habanero Peppers, Vinegar, Carrots, Onion, Salt, Garlic and Vegetable Gum(or some kind of thickener)

Seems easy enough to come close to and no stores near me carry it so with shipping, it gets a little pricey, especially since my son, with his autistic flavor buds, uses it like ketchup. Carrots, vinegar, onion, salt, garlic are cheap enough and growing my own habanero peppers makes them cheap and more importantly, available. I think I've seen them in the store once. Not much for food selection here in rural flyover country.

This recipes looks pretty darn close to the ‘Yucatan Sunshine’ sauce. Don’t hurt yourself making it!

Got a few extra ingredients that I can ignore like lime, blek, but it gives me something to go by for the procedure. Thanks.

Yeah, a whiff of simmering vinegar is bad enough without hot peppers added.

Habanero Peppers are the prettiest plant. I’ve only grown them once; I just wanted to see how they grew so I could answer questions about them from my Customers. ;)

I planted ONE plant, and ended up with an entire paper grocery sack of pretty orange, flying-saucer-shaped peppers. We took them to a local Mexican Restaurant and they were very happy to use them.

I like Franks Hot Sauce...but just a little. Jalapeno peppers that I grow (Bonnie Brand-Walmart) end up as, ‘Poppers’ or pickled in, ‘Cowboy Candy.’ We love both of those. :)
