A 30-Year Study May Have Found The Single Best Diet For Healthy Aging
Sciencealert ^ | DAVID NIELD

Would you add a few more vegetables and whole grains to your diet in return for a healthy old age? A new study has broken down in detail the food groups that increase the likelihood of healthy aging – and identified the best diet overall.

For the purposes of the study, researchers led by a team from Harvard University defined healthy aging as reaching 70 without any chronic diseases – and still being in good shape mentally and physically.

The analysis showed that the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) came top of eight healthy dietary patterns studied: developed by Harvard, the AHEI prioritizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, and healthy fats.

“70? Aged?”

No kidding! I’m insulted!

“Keep moving” is terrific advice. I’m 88 and try to walk at least 30 minutes a day. My MD said I’m the healthiest person my age he’s ever seen.
Don’t eat butter, cheese, or any other artery-clogging saturated fat. No beef or pork, and use only organic olive oil for fat. Tonight I’m having Alaskan Salmon for dinner, with organic potatoes and veggies, sliced organic red peppers and tiny organic tomatoes fromTrader Joe.

Well, I reached that goal, it was after 70 that I began falling apart.

“researchers led by a team from Harvard University” = “vegans pushing their agenda with fake science”

You still have to eat vegetables. That’s the tradeoff.

I was told if you reach 70 without major health issues, you can go to 90

Well? I am 77 years old, take no meds. Only time I was in the hospital was when, as a boy, they took our my tonsils and adenoids.

I grew up on a farm.

I took no medical advice from Harvard.

To give them credit, in my pre teens, I read philosophers in a set of Harvard Classics books.

My uncle said the same thing. Just keep moving. He was 93 when he felt bad while bailing hay in 100 degree heat. When they were finished he told my cousin he needed help getting off the tractor. They admitted him to the hospital after testing they told him there wasn’t much they could do. He could stay there and they would make him comfortable or he ciild go home. He said, “Wheres my clothes”. Kept saying he felt fine just a little weak. He passed a week later.

Oh good lord… “we did research and found if you follow the same diet we’ve been pushing for 50 years that have made people fat and diseased then you’ll live to be 70! Trust us… we do science!”

“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

You bet. Just had a glass of Chardonnay from Australia, with rice crackers and hummus. Soon, dinner, with Alaskan salmon, organic potatoes and organic Bok Choi, my favorite veggie. Dessert will be black raspberry yogurt from Trader Joe.

Recently saw my MD, we’re both happy I gained four pounds, now weigh 116

That does make sense. I read somewhere that as you get older, your chances of dying increases (obviously). But at some point it levels off.

So a person who’s 88 had the same chances of dying as someone who’s 85.

I just wish I had known that earlier. I would have delayed taking Social Security.
(Just kidding.)

“no meds”

Wow, good for you! Is your weight and BMI normal? Lots of exercise?

Weigh 165, 5'7”, I am still active. Everything works.

I can only remember 2 years I met my deductible on Medicare. Was same way with company insurance policies.

My grandmother died at 96, my father died at 94. Both were physically active.

I’m still amazed that my Doughnuts, Vodka and Gummy Bears ‘diet’ hasn’t caught on; I keep applying for Federal grants! ;)

Just eat as, ‘close to the Earth’ as you can. Shop the ‘perimeter’ of your grocery store - avoid the inner aisles!

Don’t eat things that were ‘invented’ in either a government lab or in a Marketing Meeting on 5th Avenue in New York City and you’ll be just fine. ;)

Only eat when you are hungry.
Eat lots of meat.
Eat lots of butter soaked veggies.
Drink lots of beer.
And above all ignore these idiots that want you to
live like a Vegan.

Both of my folks lived to be 89. They drank brandy, ate cookies and red meat. When they were 88 a Home Nurse visited their senior apartment. On the kitchen counter was a 2 foot pile of cookies, pastries, sweet bread- you name it. The nurse wanted me to get rid of the junk food. No way.

In a couple of months, I celebrate my 77th birthday. My doctor quoted this to me from the book of Psalms,

“Psalm 90:10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten, or even by reason of strength fourscore years; Yet is their pride but labor and sorrow; For it is soon gone, and we fly away.”

So, not matter how long we live, it is a short ride compared to what comes next.
