It is a common misconception that the Intelligence community is about lying. To the contrary, it is all about Truth Telling. But not lying. Lying is for politicians and used car salesmen. We can forgive you being wrong in your analysis or recommendations, occasionally. We must have full faith that anything you say or do is what you truly believe.

We can forgive a lot of personal failings by our members. When I understood I had a problem with alcohol, I reported adverse information on myself and got help. This meant that I temporarily lost my access. I later passed a bring-up investigation and Full Scope polygraph. I kept my clearance and regained all my access. I just passed 19 years clean and sober.

The one failing we can't and won't forgive is lying. If I had tried to conceal and/or lied about my problem then I would have permanently lost everything. This is as it should be.

For years when I was growing up my dad practiced with two of his cousins even though his father had founded the firm. The firm was still known as Name & Name until his cousins retired.

Unfortunately my dad never got to practice with his dad who became NC Attorney General just before he graduated law school. Granddad went from there to the NC Supreme Court. I did get to see my dad argue cases before his dad on the Supreme Court.
