It is easy for Alex Behr to gush about her son, Eli, whom she describes as a generous and thoughtful college junior who had a serious skateboarding phase.
It is much harder for her to talk about his politics. Ms. Behr, 59, is a Democrat in Portland, Ore., who voted enthusiastically for Vice President Kamala Harris in the November election. She and her ex-husband were appalled that Eli, 20, decided to cast his first vote in a presidential election this fall for Donald J. Trump.
When Eli brought a “Make America Great Again” hat home from college this summer, Ms. Behr threw it into the corner of his bedroom. They argued about guns, immigration and abortion, struggling to do so without permanently damaging their relationship.
“facts don’t matter to you,” Ms. Behr wrote in a moment of frustration during one text exchange about Mr. Trump’s legal battles. “love you. have a good day.”
A few months removed from Mr. Trump’s victory, the two have arrived at an impasse. Ms. Behr worries her son is being swayed by conservative opinions fed to him on YouTube and Instagram. Eli feels like he is simply learning to think for himself — a quality he admires in Mr. Trump.
“He’s not afraid to say what he thinks,” Eli said in an interview. “It seems like what he says is coming from him instead of coming from a big cabinet behind you, telling you what to say.”
Mr. Trump has for nearly a decade been a source of political divides within families, cleaving new fault lines along the way. In 2016, as younger voters leaned toward Hillary Clinton over Mr. Trump, it was easy to find left-leaning children loudly bemoaning the politics of their Trump-supporting parents, online and in the news.

Someday, her son will put her in a crappy nursing home and she will wonder why he resents her.
I suppose that many of these young men do not want to get drafted to go die in Donbas.
Not if he stays on the conservative path. He will remain generous and compassionate and grow in both aspects with increased wisdom.
Stories like this one are both ridiculous and sad.
No magic word will turn a liberal into a conservative.
And no magic word will turn a conservative into a liberal.
Life is short. Enjoy time with your family and friends. Leave politics off the table.
Only reality - real experiences - will turn a liberal into a conservative. Let that happen naturally. It’s pretty much the only way.

His son is in IT/programming and he’s lost two jobs already in his short career after university, to consultants moving operations offshore, or bringing in H1B migrants

Don’t rush everyone to grow up! :)
In fact, being here for 25 years, I can say a small percentage of us have never grown up...our votes still count :)
But I grew up on Staten Island’s south shore...a notoriously conservative enclace.
I remember hearing my first liberal comment when I was 16.
I worked at Friendly’s and some kid said “Reagan is gonna take money away from all the poor people”
When you remember the first liberal comment you ever heard, you know you’re from a conservative area!
That is what we are suppose to be raising our children to be, decent adults with kind hearts. Odd that she would succeed and be so upset about it.

As Winston Churchill said; “If you were not a liberal at 20, I would say you had no heart. If you were not a conservative by 40 I would say you had no brain.”
Aw, poor Eli. Stuck with a woke mom who lives in Portland (yes, I immediately burst out laughing when reading that) who lived through that mess a few years and is wandering through a fantasy world.

Good chance that Eli has been reading Andrew Tate's posts. Young men like Eli may feel like he is being emasculated in the environment they live in.
I’ve never seen them bellyache about all the good conservative kids who came home from college as brainwashed, America hating leftists.
Get over it.
The level of deception of die hard democrats is staggering in its scope. A few forays over to DU and you’ll see the worst of the worst.
And without a hint of irony, they are now (as of yesterday) advocating for arming up (with AR 15s) and creating democrat militias.
