It is easy for Alex Behr to gush about her son, Eli, whom she describes as a generous and thoughtful college junior who had a serious skateboarding phase.
It is much harder for her to talk about his politics. Ms. Behr, 59, is a Democrat in Portland, Ore., who voted enthusiastically for Vice President Kamala Harris in the November election. She and her ex-husband were appalled that Eli, 20, decided to cast his first vote in a presidential election this fall for Donald J. Trump.
When Eli brought a “Make America Great Again” hat home from college this summer, Ms. Behr threw it into the corner of his bedroom. They argued about guns, immigration and abortion, struggling to do so without permanently damaging their relationship.
“facts don’t matter to you,” Ms. Behr wrote in a moment of frustration during one text exchange about Mr. Trump’s legal battles. “love you. have a good day.”
A few months removed from Mr. Trump’s victory, the two have arrived at an impasse. Ms. Behr worries her son is being swayed by conservative opinions fed to him on YouTube and Instagram. Eli feels like he is simply learning to think for himself — a quality he admires in Mr. Trump.
“He’s not afraid to say what he thinks,” Eli said in an interview. “It seems like what he says is coming from him instead of coming from a big cabinet behind you, telling you what to say.”
Mr. Trump has for nearly a decade been a source of political divides within families, cleaving new fault lines along the way. In 2016, as younger voters leaned toward Hillary Clinton over Mr. Trump, it was easy to find left-leaning children loudly bemoaning the politics of their Trump-supporting parents, online and in the news.

Yeah. She wants him to stay in his "serious skateboarding phase" forever and not grow up. That is a typical Leftist mindset. They are all stuck in it themselves...unable to grow up.

They taught/forced me to think for myself.
As it turns out I’m a lot more conservative than they were.
So she is mad that he is thinking for himself and figuring things out and is not going along with the same old Democratic Party line that has been preached to him for his entire life.
I would suggest that he and his parents find a way to coexist or they’re going to drive that son away from them maybe forever
So, basically - Eli's mom is a lawless Commie harpy who believes in using "the law" to go after her political enemies, much like her idol Uncle Joe Stalin did in the late 1930s...

Hard to imagine why any mom would wish her white son to be a liberal. Walked all over by everyone. To be chained to a woman who hates men in general, hates the handsome men who won’t select her, and has unearned contempt for the men she can get.

I solved this issue in my home, we never discussed politics
it was not allowed. Want to talk politics? , take it outside.
I may close and lock the door.
But if her son decided to change his gender she would be fine with that.
Reminds me of Family Ties, A sitcom of the 1980s. Two hippies have kids And the oldest, Alex Keaton, played by a young Michael J Fox, is conservative and campaigns for Reagan!

Mom needs to get her hands out of her grown son’s pants.
He apparently is still thoughtful and generous, despite his politics. Maybe she should just be happy he’s a decent person. Maybe she should watch some of the podcasts and videos he’s been watching and really listen to his viewpoint before arguing with him.
What I see there is the mother is an EMPTY SKULL that believes/retains whatever it is that she hears/sees from the MAINSCUM MEDIA PROPAGANDIST TEAMS.
Sadly, I can see the that is what happened to My sister 4 years ago when We were on the phone and she was believing the PROPAGANDA about the INNOCENT J6 Citizens !!!
I told her "This conversation is over !" and I hung up the phone. I've had zero communication of any kind with her since then.
