Spanish archaeologists have successfully removed a 2,600-year-old shipwreck from waters off the country's southeastern coast...

It was discovered in 1994 off the coast of Murcia in southeastern Spain, near the town of Mazarrón, according to Spain's Ministry of Culture.

Now called the Mazarrón II, this shipwreck was one of two located in that same general area. The first, called Mazarrón I, was initially located in 1993, lifted from the water in June 1995, and put on display at Spain's National Museum of Underwater Archaeology in 2005 after undergoing years of conservation treatments, the museum said.

Mazarrón II is of particular interest to archaeologists and researchers because it is one of only a few Phoenician-era shipwrecks discovered largely intact, said Carlos de Juan, the director of the excavation project, in a video shared by the University of Valencia. The university partnered with the regional culture ministry in Murcia to carry out the excavation.

A team of 14 specialists worked with de Juan to lift the shipwreck from the sea in less than two months, beginning the project Sept. 13 and finishing Nov. 7. Video shows divers carrying wooden fragments of the wreck to the surface in pieces.

0:00·hey everyone welcome back for another
0:01·deep dive today we're going back in time
0:05·way back oh like over 2 and a half
0:07·thousand years to the world of the
0:09·Phoenicians a fascinating civilization
0:12·and we've got a seriously cool Discovery
0:14·to unpack definitely a remarkably intact
0:17·shipwreck it's called the mazeron II
0:20·mazeron II yeah recently raised off the
0:22·coast of Spain and get this it's giving
0:26·us a glimpse into this mysterious
0:28·civilization like never before now when
0:31·we talk about the Mazer on the second
0:33·what really makes it stand out is that
0:35·it's one of the few Phoenician
0:37·shipwrecks that's been found mostly
0:39·intact we have pieces and fragments from
0:41·other sites but the mazeron II this
0:44·gives us a chance to look at a whole
0:47·ship and that is a GameChanger when it
0:50·comes to understanding how these Master
0:52·Mariners ruled the waves for centuries
0:55·okay hold on we're talking about the
0:56·Phoenicians here the folks who gave us
0:58·the alphabet that's right right mhm but
1:00·we don't really know much about their
1:01·ships not as much as we'd like I mean
1:03·come on this is like finding a blueprint
1:06·to one of the most important Maritime
1:08·empires in history you hit the nail on
1:09·the head we have all this info about
1:11·Greek and Roman ships because they
1:13·documented everything meticulously but
1:16·the Phoenicians they were a bit more
1:18·secretive about their methods mysterious
1:20·so this shipwreck this is like a key
1:22·unlocking their secrets you really is so
1:24·let's set the scene back in
1:27·1994 this wasn't the first Phoenician
1:29·Tre treasure they found in these Waters
1:31·was it you're absolutely right you
1:32·remember the mazeron theer oh yeah
1:35·discovered just a year earlier in '93
1:37·and now a star attraction at the
1:40·national museum of underwater
1:41·archaeology in Spain wow so when they
1:44·found the Maser on the second yearby
1:46·well you can imagine the excitement I
1:47·can only imagine okay so they find this
1:49·incredible shipwreck but how do they
1:51·even begin to bring a 2600 year old
1:54·wooden puzzle to the surface it was a
1:56·delicate operation for sure it took a
1:58·team of 14 Specialists almost two months
2:02·to carefully lift the shipwreck two
2:04·months yeah piece by piece it was like
2:06·assembling a giant soggy jigsaw puzzle
2:09·that's incredible can you
2:11·describe what it was like seeing those
2:13·pieces emerge from the depths well it
2:16·was exciting to say the least and to be
2:18·honest a little perplexing perplexing
2:21·how well at first glance some parts of
2:24·the mazeron II looked like ship building
2:26·techniques used by other cultures in the
2:28·area but then we started
2:31·noticing these unique features things
2:34·we'd never seen before wait you can't
2:36·just leave us hanging like that what
2:37·kind of unique features well one of the
2:39·most interesting things was the way the
2:42·whole planks are joined together they
2:44·use a technique called a scarf joint a
2:47·scarf joint which is different from the
2:49·mortise and Tenon joints that you
2:51·usually see in like Greek or Roman ships
2:54·this scarf joint created a smoother hole
2:57·which could have made The Phoenician
2:58·ships faster
3:00·we also found evidence of unique rigging
3:03·and sail attachments suggesting a level
3:05·of sophistication we hadn't fully
3:07·grasped before wow so this isn't just
3:10·confirming what we already knew this is
3:11·like rewriting our understanding of
3:13·Phoenician ship building it's like a
3:14·hidden chapter in their story
3:16·highlighting their Ingenuity and just
3:18·how dominant they were at Sea and it
3:19·makes you wonder what else might this
3:22·shipwreck reveal so what happens now
3:25·what's next for the mees on a second
3:27·well right now every piece of the
3:29·Shipwreck is a the Museum of underwater
3:30·archaeology down in southern Spain and
3:33·it's undergoing this multi-year
3:35·conservation process year yeah it takes
3:39·time to carefully remove the salts and
3:42·preserve that fragile wood but it's
3:44·crucial to make sure that this treasure
3:46·can be studied for generations to come
3:49·so a long road ahead but well worth the
3:52·wait this isn't just about putting an
3:53·old ship back together it's about
3:55·uncovering a lost piece of History
3:57·absolutely and who knows what other
3:59·secrets the Mouser on the second might
4:01·hold

These are fascinating finds. A Phoenician boat is a real prize. I wonder how far out of the Mediterranean they ventured.
