SYDNEY, Australia - A 16th-century maritime map shows that Portuguese adventurers, not the British or the Dutch, were the first Europeans to find Australia, according to a new book that details the story of the secret discovery.
The book "Beyond Capricorn" says the map, which accurately marks geographical sites along Australia's east coast in Portuguese, proves that Portuguese seafarer Christopher de Mendonca led a fleet of four ships into Botany Bay in 1522, almost 250 years before Britain's Captain James Cook.

Mendoncas discovery was kept secret to prevent other European powers reaching the new land, said Trickett, who believes his theory is supported by discoveries of 16th-century Portuguese artifacts on the Australian and New Zealand coasts... all of which will be revealed when you buy the book, no doubt.

Why is a horse shown on 1522 "Australia?" The Aborigines must have eaten all the horses by the time Captain Cook got there.

I don't think Australia was discovered. I think someone just happened to bump into it while on the way to somewhere else....

I came from the Dreamtime
From the dusty red soil plains
I am the ancient heart
The keeper of the flame
I stood upon the rocky shore
I watched the tall ships come
For forty thousand years I was the first Australian

The map is identified as:
First map of Australia [cartographic material] : from Nicholas Vallard's atlas, 1547, in the Library of Sir Thomas Phillipps, Bart. at Middle Hill, 1856. 1856. MAP RM 2393.

The 'Portugese cartographers' obviously never set foot on Australian soil. There are natives in the distance riding camels...and who owns the horse?

The umbrella is an asian artifact...there are no geological features with arches along the coastline anywhere that I know of...and aboriginals never built HOUSES - what we see illustrated (including the large reclining cat) is nothing but a work of imagination IMO.
The Portugese were pirates!

A list of Australian Archaeological Anomalies

A mysterious rock inscription found by a farmer in 1931 on his property 50 miles west of Adelaide. The carvings were identified as Phoenician by French Archaeologists and reads: "Men of the Pharaoh of the city of Sais. Ot of Kish." It is believed they could be a link with the lost expedition of Admiral Ot sent in search of Australia by pharoah Psammetichus in 663 BC. Psammetichus, who, following the expulsion of the Assyrian invaders from Egypt moved his Government to Saia; a Nile Delta town and established the 26th Dynasty which lasted from 663 to 525 BC. Kish was an ancient Babylonian town on the Euphrates and was the birthplace of Ot, perhaps the greatest Babylonian mariner of the day.
the Phoenicians were here first!

Thanks Xcamel and Fred for the pings. This is, alas, the second such topic, but in my silliness, I neglected to ping the other one when it came up, merely adding it to the keyword. See message #19 for the link. :')
