The number of people in Japan aged 100 or older has hit a record high of more than 95,000 - almost 90 per cent of them women - government data showed on Tuesday (Sep 17).
The figures further highlight the slow-burning demographic crisis gripping the world's fourth-biggest economy as its population ages and shrinks. As of Sep 1, Japan had 95,119 centenarians, up 2,980 year-on-year, with 83,958 of them women and 11,161 men, the health ministry said in a statement.
On Sunday separate government data showed that the number of over-65s has hit a record high of 36.25 million, accounting for 29.3 per cent of Japan's population.

Most are women likely because most of the men were killed in WWII

Another reason to not overly fear nukes. Nagasaki and Hiroshima thrived and grew to major cities. The country was blanketed by radiation, nature has a way of healing.
Their version of Willard Scott no longer has any time to report on the weather.

Congratulations on your grandson and 3/4. Exciting Christmas.
Thank you ! By the way , my Mom despite being in rapidly declining health , is 94 . My father died at 91 . My grandma lived to 100 . Blessed with some good genes !
But not the men, they were pretty much killed off during the war.
How many women between 50 and 65?
That's what you're going to be telling yourself after the Russo-Ukraine or Israeli-Arab wars go nuclear?
