I’m from a Blue Zone where people often live 10 years longer than average: The No. 1 ultra-processed food I always avoid

I’m from Loma Linda, California, a small city known as the only Blue Zone in America. Studies have shown that residents live up to around a decade longer than the rest of the United States.

Why I never consume energy drinks Energy drinks have become popularized through social media over the years. They’re often marketed as quick solutions for boosting energy, fueling during a pre-workout and enhancing alertness.

As a dietitian, though, here’s why I advise caution:

1. Energy drinks can disrupt your sleep and your appetite

2. Energy drinks can spike blood sugar and increase inflammation

3. Energy drinks can affect your physical and mental health

If you find yourself constantly needing energy boosts, my best advice is to consider discussing your lifestyle and eating patterns with a registered dietitian. That can help you identify a healthier and more sustainable relationship with food and your body

Loma Linda is where around half of the residents are Seventh day Adventists. Many follow the Edenic Diet, or at least vegetarian and keep the Bible Sabbath, God’s answer to stress.

Loma Linda Adventist Medical School is world renown, and so is the Hospital.

Thanks for posting!!

My wife was told she could not get a promotion because they couldn’t guarantee no Sabbath work. She said ok, no promotion and held firm.

2 weeks later, her bosses boss called her up to San Francisco, and told her not to worry, she would never have to work on the Sabbath. They offered her the promotion.

Her faith was tested and God rewarded her.

I’m pretty sure the creator of the cosmos who can raise the dead, can find a job for someone who puts their faith before a job.

The Martyrs were burned alive for their faith. I think we can pass up a job to obey God. And there is a time coming when those who keep God’s law won’t be able to buy or sell anyways....much less keep the Sabbath. Probably soon too.

My husband was a big Lagavulin fan. I think it tastes like used paint thinner.

Laphroaig is my tipple. Distillery is only a few hundred yards from Lagavulin, completely different flavor.

I’ve never had an “energy drink” in my life. They’re just loaded full of sugar and caffeine aren’t they?

I must say, I like them both.

Lagavulin for fall/winter.

Laphroaig for spring and summer.

These are medicinal. There is a reason that it is called “water of life” in Gaelic, “uisge beatha.”

I never take more than a wee dram at once. IN the winter in the AM with coffee, and in the summer, in the evening as a night cap.The Scots have been doing just that for many hundreds of years.

My great-grandmother lived to 109 because of it. She was a MacDonald from Glenelg.

A few years ago I had a heart check. As I recall, it is the scan where they look for calcium as an indicator of coronary artery blockage. Before testing I was told there is a scale, and if your indicator is >= 400 you need to make significant changes

After testing the tech emerged saying, “well, you didn’t get a zero ... you got a one. What ever you are doing, keep on doing it!” I replied, “Thanks, I’m going to Five Guys.”

Longevity distills down to three factors, only one of which you can control (although science is working on the second):

-- Environment: What you eat; where you live; how you live, etc., over which you have some, even considerable, control
-- Genetics: Little if any control at all (at this time)
-- Luck (for lack of a better term): Hard to accept by some, but it's real.

“I’m from a Blue Zone where people often live 10 years longer than average”

Reporter: “Math is hard”. The bottom line is Blue Zone, Red Zone, Green Zone, Pink Zone, doesn’t matter. Often people will live 10 years longer than average, and likewise, often people will live 10 years shorter than average. That’s why it’s called AVERAGE.

My 3 uncles, father, all died from heart attacks from age 60-70. I am now 84; and have not had any heart issues since my mid 50’s. Only change I made was switch from no exercise to walking 30 miles werkly on a hilly course playing 5 rounds of 18. Today, I can mow my suburban size lawn with a push mower during summer weather in Florida.

Daily exercise has been most beneficial to me. I will add that my diet includes lots of fruits & veggies and less red meat.

Interesting. Me too in 2009. Was runner, ate well. Needed triple bypass and aortic valve replacement (took pig valve).

They said my artheroslerosis was congenital. As was the bicuspid aortic valve.

This Jan they told me my pig valve was shot after 15 years - it had done well. I had a new valve put in by TAVR in March (no pain or open heart surgery) so now I’m on pig valve #2 and aortic valve #3. One stent put in one blocked artery, others are fine.

Even with the blocked artery in Feb. I pushed my heart rate to 161 in stress test with the bad pig valve and no problems. That’s the maximum heart rate of a 59 year old man. Still have a runners heart tho I had to quit at 69 due to arthritis in knee caps.

So at 79 I’m proof of the grace of God - for sure.

I took the pig valve as well, I’m on eloquis for 3 months then a baby aspirin after that.

I also was told the bicuspid valve was hereditary and that I needed open heart surgery, when I told my older brother who has afib he turned white, he immediately made an appointment with his cardiologist and found out he’s fine, he has a normal tricuspid valve, he has 1 biological son and 2 biological male grandchildren who they are concerned about since bicuspid valves tend to run in male siblings or children.

I WAS told in 10-15 years when my pig valve wears out, it could be replaced with the TAVR procedure or whatever non-invasive technique might be available at that time.

I’m 64 and it was quite stressful to be undergoing open heart surgery, the idea they can stop your heart for an extended period of time freaked me out.

he implemented a no energy drink policy

Coffee is the original energy drink, and that's been universally banned for children for so long, we've forgotten why. Seventh-day Adventists also don't drink coffee. Many studies over the years though suggest coffee has statistically significant health benefits for living longer. But that sounds just like stoners believing weed is a wonder drug for all kinds of things. It's sad we live in a zero trust environment and can't believe in anything of importance anymore.

Boron is my key

There's boron in 20 Mule Team Borax (laundry detergent booster) - which apparently they still make.

One of my grandmothers lived to be 106—and had no significant health issues during her entire life.

He had one cigarette and one alcoholic drink after dinner every day.

She drank one cup of coffee every morning.

She ate pretty much every kind of food—all in moderation.

But—her real secret was something she told me when I was a teenager:

“Never believe anything you see on TV.”

She just assumed everybody lied about everything—and once she figured that out and accepted it she could relax and enjoy life.

Had 10 major surgeries - open heart surgery only one I don’t ever want again.

But mine went amazingly well, but the grace of God.

I was out of hospital on 3rd day, and walking 1 mile/day one week after surgery! 3 miles/day 2 weeks after surgery, 5 miles/day 3 weeks after surgery. Ran full 10k 9 months after surgery but trained for full marathon and ran 9 miles.

Miss my running, now overweight.......
