Airbnb renters refuse to leave, put up no trespassing sign on North Carolina woman's property

A months-long Airbnb rental has become a nightmare for the North Carolina host, because the renters refuse to leave.

A single parent in the Triangle is out money and now is having to fight to get her property back.

"Now they're refusing to leave until there's an eviction order. I think they're just trying to gain time to stay there for free because they haven't paid," Farzana Rahman said.

This all started when Rahman's most recent Airbnb guests made a long-term rental reservation through Airbnb. They checked in on October 25 with a check out date of May 24.

When Rahman's cleaning lady went to clean the rental the renters were still there.

"They answered the door and they said, 'No, we haven't moved out.' She said, 'Should I come tomorrow?' And they said, 'No, don't come back,'" Rahman said.

Rahman then went to the rental with the police, and the renters promised the police officer they would leave first thing in the morning. The next morning, the renters were still not gone.

Instead, a handwritten no trespassing sign was on the front door, that stated, "We will vacate the property when you filed the proper paperwork with the civil magistrate for an eviction, for we are legal residents of this home."

"This is my place, and I mean, I'm counting on this income; my son is in college. I'm a single parent," Rahman said.

Rahman contacted Airbnb for help as she already had another long-term renter booked through Airbnb ready to move in. She said Airbnb has not been helpful.

"They're sending me messages as please get help for your safety and get whatever legal help you have to get to get them out," she said.

At night, back up your old 1972 AMC Gremlin to the house. Connect the the exhaust pipe the the dryer vent. Put a brick on the gas pedal. In the morning the squatters will be "gone".

I think you can put a hold on a certain amount and the card could not be canceled unless the balance was paid

I wonder if it is that simple? And how often this time of abuse takes place? I’m sure AirBnB doesn’t like the bad news. And I’m sure they still have some liability.

I doubt it, unless they were previously informed about renters and did not suspend their account. Their terms and conditions are likely to cover bad renters. They they told her to make sure she is safe and contact local law enforcement. It’s not their fault the residents there get what they vote for.

No, owner has the keys and approved renters (unless owner signed some agreement to have other management team screen and approve renters). Screening guests is on the host.

Airbnb's contractual arrangement with hosts generally eliminates the company's liability. Airbnb acts as a broker, connecting hosts and guests, and guests are not considered insured. However, hosts may be liable for damage or lawsuits if a guest is injured while renting from them. Airbnb offers hosts up to $1 million in liability insurance through AirCover for Hosts, which covers guests' injuries, damaged or stolen belongings, and more. However, some say it's better for hosts to purchase their own insurance.

Yes but AirBNB is not liked in many communities and I’m sure there are attorneys that would love to have the case the breaks them and makes them accountable for the renters. First, history of these folks, discovery and public disclosure of how frequent this happens, and AirBnB’s response in the past. I think they lose, especially if the play the big bully in the local community hurting the locals, while keeping the profit.

The owner's name is an Arabic one (Muslim).

When I searched for the name, "rate my professor" popped up immediately.

There are over 10 professors at 10+ different colleges in the USA with that exact full name.

Is it any wonder many of our college graduates are ignorant barbarians?

Maybe find rentals owned by that group and do this to them to help encourage them to go back to where they came from?

The easy fix is to put a minimum credit rating at 750 to rent it. That will solve most of the issues without anyone screaming discrimination.

That renter has legal rights to the BNB and the squatters should be moved out by the police.

Just as a semi-related sidenote, I don’t use Airbnb since they ticked me off a few years ago. However, I’ve had good luck with VRBO... which is similar.

These types of organization are always requesting that the renters submit a review right away after the trip is over. At the same time, the property manager also does a review on the renters. However, while the property owners get to see what the renters say about them and their properties, the renters don’t get to see what the property owners are saying about them.

I know a few people with Air B&B’s. They are overextended, heavily in debt, and should not be in that business position. They are very much the “next seminar away” from being millionaires.

A few friends in the middle of the night, with appropriate gear, could solve this problem. The owner might have to supply the alcohol for the cooler but other than that those friends might do it for no charge.

While this sounds pretty harsh, it is also pretty harsh when people refuse to leave when it’s time to leave. It would seem like eviction should be a much simpler procedure than it apparently is.
