A Massachusetts man survived what officials are calling a “surprise attack” by two grizzlies on Sunday at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, authorities said.

According to Jeremy Barnum, Grand Teton’s chief of staff, the 35-year-old man, who has not been identified, was in stable condition, the Jackson Hole News & Guide reported.

The man had a “surprise encounter” with two grizzlies in the Signal Mountain Area of the park Sunday afternoon, according to the Cowboy State Daily. According to a news release from the National Park Service, one of the bears attacked the victim, inflicting serious injuries.

“Grand Teton National Park rangers and Teton County Search and Rescue personnel responded to the scene to provide emergency medical care and airlifted the patient via helicopter to an awaiting ambulance where he was transported to St. John’s Hospital,” Barnum said in an email to the Cowboy State Daily.

That’s why you never hike in bear territory alone.

Let me guess, the cops classified the attackers as “white”.

Thanks, it sounded plausible to me as well. In future spare time, I will have to look in the literature stacks and see if any research has been done on this.

The Minute Man Museum in Massachusetts has a no carry sign on the door.

Actually, it's because human aren't as hard to catch as, say, a gazelle. (Maneaters by Peter Hathaway Capstick)

WIFE: Honey, why are you putting on running shoes for our hike in the woods?
HUSBAND: So I can run from the grizzlies or mountain lions, if we encounter any of them. You just keep your hiking boots on.
WIFE: You can’t outrun a grizzly or mountain lion when they charge at you.
HUSBAND: All I have to outrun is YOU, dear...

The National Park Service in Yellowstone actively discourages using firearms to defend against bears.

Using a firearm in defense of self or others is not illegal in the parks.

There have been more than one court case to this effect.

Instead they push bear spray. Bear spray is not as effective as a handgun when it comes to defending against bears.

Yes, and both bears were wearing MAGA hats.

Sweat is salty, and I would presume high in sodium. Porcupines are notorious tor gnawing things that have been saturated in sweat.

“Surprise attack” by wild animals? Is there any other kind? I find it hard to believe that anyone would “expect” an attack by grizzlies, unless you’re suicidal.
