A common type of fiber may trigger bowel inflammation (Inulin with IBD)

Inulin, a type of fiber found in certain plant-based foods and fiber supplements, causes inflammation in the gut and exacerbates inflammatory bowel disease in a preclinical model, according to a study.

The study shows that inulin, which is found in foods such as garlic, leeks and sunchoke, as well as commonly used fiber supplements and foods with added fiber, stimulates microbes in the gut to release bile acids that increase the production of molecules that promote intestinal inflammation.

Feeding inulin to mice in the context of a model of inflammatory bowel disease increased the production of certain bile acids by specific groups of gut bacteria. The increased bile acids boosted the production of an inflammatory protein called IL-5 by ILC2s. The ILC2s also failed to produce a tissue-protecting protein called amphiregulin.

In response to these changes, the immune system promotes the production of immune cells called eosinophils, which further ramp up inflammation and tissue damage. Previously, a 2022 study by the same team of investigators showed that this flood of eosinophils may help protect against parasite infections. However, in the inflammatory bowel disease model, this chain reaction exacerbated intestinal inflammation, weight loss and other symptoms like diarrhea.

In translational patient-based studies, the team also analyzed human tissue, blood and stool sample. This analysis revealed that patients with inflammatory bowel disease, like the mice fed inulin, had higher levels of bile acids in their blood and stool and excessive levels of eosinophils in their intestine compared with people without the condition.

The results suggest that the inflammation cascade similar to that in the mice fed inulin is already primed in humans with inflammatory bowel disease.

I was stationed in Korea for a year. Koreans LOVE garlic. The Koreans eat so much garlic they smell like garlic. I developed a love for Korean food as did many of my colleagues. Bowel problems didn’t seem a problem. We would eat whole cloves of garlic with strips of grilled pork and rice wrapped lettuce leafs.

All I know is that if I eat anything with Inulin as a fiber booster, I will have serious gas, cramping and diarrhea.

>>>God provided grain as well, and is an advocate for bread, which I doubt very much was made with refined white flour.>>>

We see throughout scripture, God’s original diet was the best. This text is in the garden of Eden, no meat because there was no death. Fruits, grains, nuts, vegetables. Then we see God calling Isreal out of Egypt after they had been in Egypt for 400 years. And what does God supply them with? Manna from heaven......no meat. They ended up complaining because they didn’t have meat. They longed for the “fleshpots” of Egypt.

So God is angry and gives them so much meat, quail, it comes out of their nostrils.

Daniel Chapter 1. Daniel and his 3 hebrew friends reject the King’s rich food and challenge them. They will eat no meat, only the food God intended and drink no wine. After 10 days, they are healthier, wiser and even better looking!

We were never designed to eat meat. How utterly ridiculous. Meat is the result of sin, because death is the result of sin. God gave Noah permission to eat flesh food because vegetation was all dead after the flood. This is the first itme we see God giving man permission to eat meat.

Jesus ate fish because Jesus finds us where we are. Thousands of years had passed and yes eating meat, clean meat is not a sin. But if you want colon cancer, be my guest. I want to go to heaven first class, not coach.

Our body’s needs changed with the Fall.

There are nutrients our bodies need that only meat provides. God’s telling men to eat meat was not necessarily a condescension. That’s pure speculation that that is why God *allowed* people to eat meat.

If a meat free diet works for you, have at it.

I will die when God deems my time is up and not before, whether I eat meat or not. I’ve survived stuff that has convinced me that if God wants you alive, then you will be, no matter what the medical community tries to do to you.

I was taking Jarrow Inulin-FOS for many months(at least). Just quit April fool’s day, just over a month ago. That product seemed to help me when I first started taking it. For what it’s worth, I have never been diagnosed with IBS, IBD or any intestinal disease. Spent much money on probiotics, however.

I have inulin to try, but have had intestinal/digestive issues for years so now am not sure how I’ll be able to tolerate it.

I react to all probiotics I have ever tried. Not sure why.

Inulin, 4-8g / day in the form of gummies hasn’t triggered a flare for me yet after about two months of using it. Has been helping matters. Also take psyllium type fiber. And I take pro and pre biotics separately.

People live longer and healthier lives on a balanced vegetarian diet. You can’t improve on God.

Good Lord, now I see this...

High Soluble Fiber Promotes Colorectal Tumorigenesis Through Modulating Gut Microbiota and Metabolites in Mice

But study used unnaturally high dose of soluble fiber in mice.

Soluble fiber dose may be a curvilinear thing with respect to colon health:

-Too little is bad (poor micro biome)
-Moderate is good (healthy micro biome)
-Too much is really bad (colon cancer)

God also gave man meat to eat. Matter of fact, it was required of some of their feasts, like Passover.

Who knew God was trying to hurt them?

I would think any association between soluble fiber supplement intake and colon cancer or any cancer in humans would be evident by now. Longitudinal regression studies tease those things out.

Studies are often designed to produce an outcome, not learn anything new.

That’s fine but I challenge you to find any of those original seed bearing plants. Wheat, corn, and oats have been genetically modified to be drought and pest resistant and grow almost anywhere. That was not gods original plan.

And besides, does the Bible not also say that we have dominion over all the animals? I’m not telling you to stop eating. That’s absurd.

I took psyllium for years and it worked perfectly. And then one day it didn’t. Not sure why. Got the NOW brand from Amazon.

Went to prunes, but they’re not easy to pack for traveling, so maybe I’ll give psyllium another shot.

“We see throughout scripture, God’s original diet was the best.”

Definitely not THROUGHOUT Scripture. References to Garden Of Eden and Daniel are O.T.

In the N.T., meat is fine, and Timothy goes so far as to say that telling others to abstain from meat is from Satan — a “doctrine of devils”.

1 Timothy 4:
1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
