Cereals regarded as healthy may actually raise your risk of dementia — and it's not because of the sugar.
A study published in the journal General Psychiatry found a link between a vitamin in brands such as Cheerios and Shreddies and cognitive decline, which can be a precursor for dementia.
Thiamine, or vitamin B1, is also found naturally in whole grains, legumes, liver and salmon, and not getting enough of it has also been linked to health issues.
But researchers say for the first time they've discovered a J-shaped curve that indicates consuming too much also has negative consequences.

For decades, my breakfast has been...
Oatmeal with:
- Dried Cranberries
- Sliced Strawberries
Banana on the side
Skim milk chaser
I can live without liver, but whole grains, legumes and salmon? At the rate we’re going, the next generation will not be allowed to eat anything but tofu and insects.
I don’t believe most of these “studies” nor the conclusions that the media creates from them.
Oatmeal raises the blood sugar.
I am too. I am an inveterate cereal eater. Of all kinds. If it is crunchy and can have milk poured over it, I will consider eating it. The only one I fastidiously avoid is Wheaties, because no amount of sugar or little amount of milk poured will prevent it from turning into inedible mush.
Kind of the same for Puffed Wheat, but for some reason, Sugar Smacks (now called Honey Smacks for woke marketing reasons) don’t
Cocoa Puffs, Raisin Bran, Honeycombs...you name it. It all goes down the hatch the same way rotting whale meat or fresh human meat would go down the gullet of a Great White Shark.
Personally, I don’t care about this. Not even a bit. I think people who obsess over it have too much time on their hands and not enough perspective.
Yesterday it was Niacin… today it’s Thiamine…
Somebody, probably Pfizer, is astroturfing
I was born before the Korean War ended: 1964.
OK, we can disregard all this blather. It's these people that need help...
I’ve been eating my cheap store-brand toasty-o’s for years w/out problems.
The “researchers” are full of it…..
This has been making the rounds regarding oatmeal and cheerios.
*The Old Timers is creeping in.
Both sets of my grandparents are from Battle Creek. My grandfather on my dad’s side worked for Kellogg’s and my grandfather on my mother’s side worked for Post.
This can’t be true if I had dementia I would remember that
Live without liver, onions, bacon, mashed potatoes w/ gravy and peas. Never...
On the flip side of the thiamine coin: Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (also called alcohol dementia) is a set of neurological conditions that result from a thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency.
I eat dementia everyday and see no signs of oatmeal.
Too much of ANYTHING is not good for you.
I just saw something similar about the negative effects of too much niacin because so much is *fortified* these days.
That’s the cereal the cause a Jakob Creutzfeldt Syndrome outbreak.
