Once-bustling American malls are going bust as shoppers flock to online retailers instead of sprawling, brick-and-mortar locations.
Ten years from now, there will be approximately 150 malls left in the US, Nick Egelanian, president of retail consulting firm SiteWorks, told The Wall Street Journal.
That's down from around 2,500 locations in the 1980s and 700 today, Egelanian said.

Malls were big all through the Eighties and paced at Christmas time.
Teen Mall Rats weren’t a big problem when adults were still going to malls.
In San Diego, the Bonita Mall was once a fine place to shop. 1978. The next time I saw it in 1999, most store space was vacant and gangs had staked out territory in various areas. Not a safe place. I entered to purchase an item from the Radio Shack store. I was nearly run down by a black driver doing 65 MPH down a parking lot corridor. Never going back.
The Blues Brothers didn’t help the malls in the 80s, either. (“I see the Pontiacs are out early!”) |
Actually they were Oldsmobiles.
Yup they are riddled with crime.
But there are dozens of posters on this site attacking H1-B visa workers, who never commit a violent crime, pay all taxes, and make money for the employer outfit by working cheap.
Amazon & Walmart on-line shopping has killed off the malls. Everything can be bought cheaper on-line, just about, and gets delivered to home. That saves driving expensive Tesla to the mall.
I do like to actually see the merchandise and try it on, but sometimes check pricing online...
it just gobbles up so much time to get in the car, find a place to park, and wander about, that it has made OnLine a popular alternative.
Yep. And I’m old enough to remember when Sharpstown Mall had the best Foley’s. They was a long, long time ago.
Now, even the once-upscale Galleria has gone ghetto. I haven’t set foot in there in ages.
Has there ever been a mall without a public bus stop?
first, people are older, children grown....once your children are grown, there's really not much reason to be shopping constantly....
I don't know about the rest of you, but I wear a few select items, they get washed and worn again....not a big wardrobe, thank God....so I don't need nor do I want many new clothes....I got plenty...as does the husband....
Secondly, since we are an aging population who wants to be walking all over a mall when you can order it on amazon or go to a drive up store....
thirdly, the younger generations are not very respectful and the hooliganinism and crime are just too much.
30 years ago I used to think that was such an amazing place.
My how times change....
DITTO!
But in SE asia they deal with thieves and people who cause trouble. Severely. Plus the culture is generally more civil there, also being more homogenous as a society is beneficial. Everything I said before, just phrased a little differently.
But thnk you for giving an example that proves my points.
How many blacks in Toronto?
More specifically how many radicalized Democrat party blacks are there?
My conspiracy theory is Bezos hires “teens” to destroy malls and keep people out of them. Who the hell wants to risk getting murdered by a group of teens looking at sneakers in a mall? Just order them on Amazon.
Makes ya wonder where the little naggers stole the bus fare. Same story, Southwyck Mall, Toledo, mid-90’s
Last I heard about my favorite Mall, Permian Mall, it was renamed Music City Mall, and they added an ice skating rink (in West Texas !?!)..
Haven’t been there for more than 2 decades, so I have no idea how it is doing.
Extend public transportation out to the burbs.
