A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage in connection with the felling of the world-famous Sycamore Gap tree on Hadrian’s Wall.
The boy remains in custody and is assisting officers with their inquiries, Northumbria Police said on Thursday afternoon.
Superintendent Kevin Waring, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is a world-renowned landmark and the events of today have caused significant shock, sadness and anger throughout the local community and beyond.
“An investigation was immediately launched following this vandalism, and this afternoon we have arrested one suspect in connection with our inquiries.
“Given our investigation remains at a very early stage, we are keeping an open mind. I am appealing to the public for information to assist us – if you have seen or heard anything suspicious that may be of interest to us, please let us know.”
The world-famous Sycamore Gap tree on Hadrian’s Wall, which was felled in the middle of the night by vandals, could be saved, experts hope.
The fallen tree, which dates from the 18th century, was discovered by walkers in Northumberland on Thursday morning after someone took a chainsaw to its trunk overnight.
The Woodland Trust has said it was 'horrible' to see that the tree had been felled CREDIT: Owen Humphreys/PA The sycamore was voted Woodland Trust Tree of the Year in 2016 and was visited by tens of thousands of walkers each year – even featuring in the 1991 film Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, which starred Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman.
Kim McGuinness, the Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, said she was “incandescent” and the force vowed to “use every tactic at our disposal” to find the culprit.

My thoughts as well.
At the end of the day, he cut down a tree of dubious historical significance. Loggers cut down 250 year old trees all the time.
Sure, the kid's an a$$hole but it's not like he shredded the Mona Lisa here. Let's have some perspective.
Maybe he’s a fan of Bill Gates
Some trees that after cutting down will grow back, hope this one can, will be 20-30 years though from the size of that.
Still angry about the apartment builders in the 1970s that cut down every one of the 200 year old oak trees out of the 20 acres of woods behind our house, breaks my heart to this day.
That would be my guess.
That could be.
Much less know how to use it to cut down a tree that size without getting himself maimed?
then you have this in U.S.A.-
“It just took a little push to topple the delicately perched boulder – millions of years in the making – in Utah’s Goblin Valley State Park. Then the man who did it laughed, high-fived his son, and flexed his muscles while being cheered on by a fellow Boy Scout leader.”
This was in 2014- super jerks-
they were charged with felonies
"Asian" as they say in Jolly Olde?
I remember when that happened................
I wrote a poem in high school about an old tree removed for a parking lot. Our 50th reunion is in a couple weeks. I was an environmentalist back then. I started an organization to clean a polluted local creek. The last few years the water has been remarkably clear.
Yobs
Can’t live with ‘em, can’t cane ‘em
I would opt for one of the old penalties for thievery - both hands.
Seems it was featured in a scene of a Robin Hood movie:

My wife was cleaning stuff out and found a photo of our house from when we bought it 30 years ago. All you could see was huge fir trees behind the house.
A developer went in and cut them ALL down (was fined a pittance, and sold the trees for lumber for good money). Now there is a McMansion staring down on us.
Although the older neighbors up the block said our house was the same and built in the woods their kids played in. Except the developer that built ours 50 years ago at least left a bunch of the trees on the property.
Son of Obama? Probably.

Good for you! Back when I was a kid that was the big thing in school. I even have a letter that I wrote (class project) to President Nixon to clean up the environment.
We needed the EPA to get rules and enforcement to clean things up. But it has gone from banning dumping of motor oil into rivers to banning .02% of CO2 or whatever the number is. I had an old boss complain about some new EPA rule with a limit of 0.5 ppm of some chemical. “The instruments can only measure down to 2 ppm!”
I recall that scene. I thought it was as soon as I saw the picture posted.
The Robin Hood movie with Kevin Kostner. NOT the REAL Robin Hood with Errol Flynn:

“Welcome to Sherwood”
Britain gave up any interest in preserving their society a long time ago. They've got much bigger problems than some punk cutting down a tree.
I would opt for one of the old penalties for thievery - both hands.
This will make a return, mark my words, only it won't be the Brits cutting off hands. It'll be the people they gave their country away to.
“Some trees that after cutting down will grow back, hope this one can, will be 20-30 years though from the size of that.”
Yeah some sprouts will grow back. Whether they survive to a full-blown tree? Possibly.
I'll have to agree with you there.
The Asians will Rule Britainia.
