Hadrian’s Wall is a long way from Robin Hood’s stomping grounds, and the 18th century was long after Robin Hood’s day.

My thoughts as well.

At the end of the day, he cut down a tree of dubious historical significance. Loggers cut down 250 year old trees all the time.

Sure, the kid's an a$$hole but it's not like he shredded the Mona Lisa here. Let's have some perspective.

If you don't preserve your society's symbols, you'll no longer have a society.

I would opt for one of the old penalties for thievery - both hands.

Seems it was featured in a scene of a Robin Hood movie:

I recall our bus driving down the autobahn. The driver told us better to hit pole than a tree. Pretty big fines for destroying trees. Same in UK, people will riot if some city counsel will try to chop down a yew tree.

It may not be the Mona Lisa-but if you look carefully, you will see that there are no other trees visible in the photo. I don’t know where you live, but for most of us, having trees nearby to hold in soil and prevent erosion is a big deal-even pastures and fields are edged with trees/woodland duh! Fine that brat’s parents until their bank account bleeds to pay for replacement tree/trees...

“Loggers cut down 250 year old trees all the time.” And unless the trees are dead/dying or diseased, creating forest fire fuel, those old trees are NOT cut. There are also strict rules for planting replacement trees in logged areas-it is called maintaining a sustainable resource-my employer worked as a logger in Oregon and Alaska-take a look at those pages and pages of rules and regs-for each area-if you want some perspective...
