STICKER SHOCK New driving law comes into force in 35 days bringing automatic $400 charge for EV vehicle owners and a $200 yearly toll (Texas EV's)

TEXAS has announced plans to charge vehicle owners a $200 annual fee, as well as a $400 one-time fee for new owners.

The law, signed by Governor Greg Abbott, is set to take effect on September 1 of this year.

Those who have an electric vehicle will be responsible for paying the new annual fee in order to recoup tax money.

Electric vehicle owners do not have to pay taxes on gasoline, since they no longer need it.

According to the Dallas Morning News, this law will not apply to anyone that owns electric motorcycles, mopeds, or autocycles.

These taxes on gas are normally utilized for improvement in the state including schools, highway, and road repairs.

According to the comptroller’s office, this new law plans to generate $38million for the state highway fund, in addition to the $3.8billion they will eventually earn from gasoline and diesel taxes.

“This is extremely important to make sure people are paying their fair share and that we have adequate funding for the preservation and maintenance of our highways in the future,” said State House Rep. Terry Canales, an Edinburgh Democrat, in April of this year.

For reference, the average person with a gasoline-powered vehicle pays approximately $130 in state gas taxes per year in Texas, according to data maintained by the Federal Highway Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency.

And not everyone is happy about the change as it could disincentivize people buying electric cars.

“Texas is really behind the curve on trying to do the right thing by the environment. And so, that’s embarrassing, I think, for all of us,” UT-Austin transportation engineering professor Kara Kockelman told KVUE.

Consumer Reports policy analyst Dylan Jaff also criticized the law, stating that it will not be as helpful to the state's road funding as

Let’s just wait till December when the blue norther’s roll in. You electric commies will be crying in your Pinot noir about lack of range.
Something I hear your wife complains about regularly…

Is Greg Abbott legally changing his name to Gray Davis?? This is a way to get kicked out of office quick.

Texans should impeach him quick, though I don't recommend replacing him with Arnold Schwarzenegger. But your call.

“”but I will concede fanricate that most EV owners don’t actually ‘drive’ their cars”

But why are you guys pushing the EV crap here? We’re not going to buy EVs unless we can see a BENEFIT and paying an extra $200 a year for a sticker is NOT a benefit.

There are still plenty of other sites where people pushing EVs are still welcome (for now) - you guys might even find one or two converts there...but not here.

They’re building massive lengths of elevated hwy in San Antonio alone.

His is for population expansion. I imagine this yearly charge is for that

If that’s the case, it’s Texans paying for the influx

If the influx also votes democrat that would be a quadruple insult

Always with the same tired personal attacks. Low IQ people cannot seem to debate a subject without going personal. Going personal requires little thought; as I just demonstrated

Did I not mention filling MY vehicle with gas costing ~$50? Did I say I owned an EV? It’s a simple conversion to compute mileage to watts. Simply reducing the number of moving parts improves reliability. How many parts in your Internal combustion engine + transmission are allowed to fail before you come to a stop? How many parts are there?

It’s engineering
Conservative figures are ~2,000 moving parts in your typical internal combustion engine and transmission; contrasted to about 20 (twenty) in a Tesla

https://www.greencarfuture.com/electric/tesla-number-moving-parts

As for life expectancy and efficiency

https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/evtech.shtml

Every automaker on the planet is switching to EV. Every single one. Now; who do you suppose knows more about the subject matter? Us few on the board: or every automotive engineer working at every automaker on the planet?

I am just a R&D engineer who happens to be better informed than most on Lithium battery development and new technologies on energy storage than most. I also know that more storage advancement has been made in the last 15 years than in the history of mankind. And it is not slowing down. If you wanted investment advice; I would suggest looking into Lithium supply. It is going to grow exponentially

AFAIAC, Texas and every other state can tax EVs out of existence!

EVs are a scam! A hoax!

I know, you know and they know that there is NO benefit to EVs except for the Chinese! And, the Biden Crime Family, of course!

A pox on their house!

^^^^. Exactly
When it makes economic sense for YOU; then, and only then, should YOU make the decision. Better, faster and cheaper. More reliable, more efficient, more economical, more affordable. And it needs to fit your lifestyle.

The Deep State will get around to that once they’ve banned ICE vehicles, when there isn’t enough juice to power their golf carts, and when we’re all wearing Mao jackets.

Not sure that ‘faster’ matters, since virtually all cars can operate at posted speed limits, but yes - the EVs now have to deal with people making, cold, hard, decisions based on FACTUAL differences, not emotion. And they don’t do as well on that level as gasoline cars, which are really, really, nice these days, even low-end ones.

“EVs are dirtier for the environment.”

The environment is just fine except in big democrat cities which can’t be fixed.
