The summer holidays are nearly here which would normally mean there's never been a better time to fire up the barbeque and line it with beef burgers.
But a new study shows you might want to swap them for meat-free alternatives if you want to do your bit to save the planet.
University of Oxford experts say eating just 100g of meat per day – less than a single burger – creates four times more greenhouse gases compared with a vegan diet.
The researchers now want to see prompt policy action from government and organisations to trigger 'dietary shifts away from animal-based foods'.
Previous studies have already suggested there are personal health benefits from ditching a meat diet, including reduced risk of heart disease.
The new study was led by experts from the Livestock, Environment and People (LEAP) project at the University of Oxford, which is working to understand the 'health, environmental, social and economic effects of meat and dairy production'.
'Our dietary choices have a big impact on the planet,' said lead author Peter Scarborough, professor of population health at Oxford's Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences and LEAP project investigator.
'Our results, which use data from over 38,000 farms in over 100 countries, show that high meat diets have the biggest impact for many important environmental indicators, including climate change and biodiversity loss.
'Cutting down the amount of meat and dairy in your diet can make a big difference to your dietary footprint.'
Scientists have long been vocal about the huge carbon footprint of humanity's love for meat, fish and dairy, especially beef.
Animal agriculture contributes to global warming because of the methane, nitrous oxide and carbon emissions of livestock and their supply chains.
What's more, deforestation to make way for space to rear cattle reduces the...

Heh, such things are in the list of reasons for the 2nd Amendment.
critters are a recycling machine...poop makes the grass grow...critters eat grass....make more poop....steak on a grill is a bonus....
Eating meat creates four times more greenhouse gas than being vegan.
Cows are vegan
hmmmmmm
LOL! See my post next to yours!................
I call BS. Do you know how much methane cabbage creates?
I am a Second-hand Vegan.
Cows eat grass.
I eat cows................................
And BEANS....................
Vegan lives are unhealthy lives.
To approach any where near being healthy, protein supplements and massive doses of vitamin B12 are necessary for a veganist.
Veganism has created two large industries....... protein supplements and uncountable B12 supplements
Water covers 71% of the earth’s surface. The most plentiful greenhouse gas is, is of course, water vapor, not cow farts.
from Wikipedia: “The current global average concentration of CO 2 in the atmosphere is (0.04%) 421 ppm as of May 2022.”
The problem is, no leader of any importance will stand up and forcefully call out the global warming enthusiasts for the fools, hypocrites, and liars they are. They just won’t.
“Wasn’t there a recent study stating red meat is superior to ze bugs?”
Red meat is the HEALTHIEST food on the planet, simply because humans hunted it and thus adapted to it. Obviously, the people who are in the process of banning it understand the same.
...and so this will get interesting. An outright ban is highly unlikely, as our masters want to stay healthy, so more likely, the cost will simply be driven up...way up.
And after that process is over and beef, for example, is priced on the order of $30/lb., people will figure out what is happening, and then start to complain.
Jonathan Chadwick. What a fruitcake name.
It’s all conditioning. They want us to do things that are repulsive. If they can get us to do that, then we will compliantly follow all their orders. Extreme pushback is required now. There’s no slippery slope allowed when it comes to the food supply.
Had a great burger yesterday at a brew pub.
Huge hand-formed patty fresh that day from a local farm. BLT, blue cheese, and dried onion strings, on a what I think was a brioche. Medium rare, but mostly rare.
It was awesome.
It’s just a war against people who are independent of government control.
Could be ranchers. Could be oil guys. Could be people who go to church or synagogue.
If vegans were conservatives, “studies” would show vegetables are destroying the planet.
I eat meat, of some variety, every day.
Everything “they” say is propaganda.
Have yourself a steak, and stay out of Kensington…
So uhm, do animals suddenly produce more co2 when they are domestic as opposed to wild? Do whales produce more than their share? Did you guys forget water is the biggest greenhouse gas? Do you guys ever feel bad for pushing garbage “science”?
Veganism=death for every living creature.
Green house gases aren’t going to destroy us, and if they are, Asia will provide more than enough for our demise. I am sick of the foregone conclusion that green house gases are toxic and climate change is man caused. I am unconvinced of either proposition.
