If a Patient cannot remove CO2 then in short order they can (and will) become acidotic. This is measured by the Ph levels which are tight levels (similar to Potassium) in that if those levels deviate for too long then very serious complications can arise. Human life (or other) is simply incompatible with Ph (or Potassium AKA ‘K’ at improper levels. Prolonged incompatible levels can result in long lasting complications and of course death.
Ventilators are designed to facilitate circulation in the airways. Gas exchange occurs when O2 and CO2 are absorbed and removed. Life cannot be sustained without this important metabolic process occurring regularly and relatively quickly.
Ventilators do not ‘cause death.’ Ventilators save lives, they prolong life.
