Woman lay dead on her couch for 2 years. How did no one notice, London court asks

Sheila Seleoane’s skeletal remains were found on the couch of her apartment more than two years after her death went unnoticed, authorities in London say. A local court opened an investigation to find out how she died, when — and why no one noticed. She lived alone in South London and worked as a medical secretary.

Sometime in 2019, late summer or fall, Seleoane died, News 24 reported. But no one noticed. In February 2022, London Metropolitan Police forced their way into her apartment and found her decomposing remains on the couch, dressed in blue pajamas and a white shirt with deflated balloons nearby

Officials identified her remains using dental records, but could not determine her cause of death because of the “advanced state of decomposition,”

In September, her neighbors complained to Peabody Trust, the landlord of the building, about a terrible smell coming from Seleoane’s apartment that filled the hallway, BBC reported. One resident said they contacted the landlord more than 50 times, The Daily Mail reported. Eventually, the smell began to fade. By March 2020, the landlord began taking Seleoane’s rent out of her Universal Credit, monthly payments from the British government.

In June, her gas was shut off, BBC reported. In mid-October 2020, officers visited Seleoane’s home twice in one week to check on her welfare, The Standard reported. They never made contact with her but inaccurately told her landlord that she was “safe and well.” The landlord “took no other steps to investigate,” The Standard reported. Seleone’s mail continued to pile up, increasingly concerning her neighbors, The Guardian reported.

“Officers,” probably social services employees, lied.

“Back the blue” they tell us.

They don’t make it easy, do they.

This breaks my heart. This poor woman had NO ONE. The neighbor complained about the smell, the police did nothing — and she had no one. Prayers for her.

Of course she was, 'fine.' She was just pining for the Fjords. Very common. ;)

If they had told the cops she had firearms in her apartment, you know they would have entered with no problem.

About 25 years ago there was a guy in Germany who had been dead for 5 years. Auto bank deposit of disability payments. Auto withdrawal of rent and utilities. When the money went negative, they broke into his house and were able to get his date of death because the robe wearing skeleton has a TV guide opened to a date even though the tv was off

I was watching a youtube of some folks exploring an old abandoned house in England. Place was falling apart, old stuff strewn apart, etc.

They are in the bedroom talking about the room, the old bed with the piles of dirty blankets, etc. when a voice calls out “Who’s there?”

There was an old lady under the covers. They had a long chat with her and she said she was fine. The youtubers checked in with social services and they knew of her. She was married but didn’t live with him in town, preferring to live in the old “abandoned” house that was hers. He would bring her food. But I imagine she’ll end up the same if her husband dies before her.

So the gov’t automatically deposits support payments & the landlord automatically receives payments & no one ever checks to see if there’s a live person there. Maybe they need to send a postcard once a year requiring that you call or stop by in person to prove you exist.
