The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
I just took a nutrition class where the teacher said to avoid nightshades if you suffer from RA.
If you can find liquid Bone Meal, that stuff ROCKS! Anything that fruits or blooms will love it; tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cukes & zukes and all blooming flowers.
Dig out enough soil for a shallow pie plate which is level with the ground.
Fill pie plate with Stale beer (if therei s such a thing)as the odor of fermentation draws the slugs.
The slugs will indulge in the beer, and pass away, drunken, with a smile on their antennas.
Cheers !
I froze a bunch of red peppers to use for this last time you mentioned it. Came across them in the freezer the other day!
Good timing, as always!
It’s got to be the acidity. My Dad had &my Sister has arthritis and neither could/can tolerate anything citrus - makes their joints sore.
I avoid citrus just based on being related to them, but I’ll risk All Things Tomato. :)
I'd never seen one either - until over a decade ago -
I saw one standing on the front lawn at dusk, it was just taking
in the sights, chilling.
Then it/they decided to burrow under my next door neighbor's back patio.
Neighbor Ralph didn't take too kindly to that. Not at all.
The Hav-A-Hart trap and the .38 took care of it.
Yes - he trapped it alive so he could safely shoot it in the head.
Whatever - that was Ralph.
Someone commenting on another blog post regarding pressure canning pimiento peppers, said they roasted a red bell pepper & used that to make delicious pimiento cheese. I am going to have to try it - love roasted red peppers.
Had a little cry thinking about my grannies - really missing them while reminiscing about their gardening & canning. Both were fantastic cooks, even though their cooking styles were different.
Rationalization. A few is what will do the job
Big $$$ is hyperbolic exaggeration
No, chipmunks are very territorial and there is no such thing as a chipmunk colony
I miss my Grandmas, too. One was a City Girl, so I learned about Art, Music, Theater, Literature, which fork to use for what, how a ‘Lady’ comports herself, how to dress properly for any occasion and why owning REAL jewelry is an important investment. ;)
The other was a Farm Girl and, of course, I learned USEFUL stuff from her. Baking bread, cooking from scratch, growing a garden, sewing, butchering & canning.
To this day I bake bread in heels, a pretty apron & and my Pearls. *SMIRK*
Yeah, Right. Guess which Grandma won out? ;)
Perhaps - So to humor you, I shall rephrase it -
"I don't want to spend as much, or MORE, on feeding black-oiled
sunflower seeds to chipmunks all summer as I would spend on tomatoes
if I just drove over to Stella's farm market and BOUGHT tomatoes."
Better?
;-)
Thank you. I’ll give ‘er a try.
thanks i will look for that- We used to drink milk straight from a ranch- we woudl go and buy a few gallons at a time, skim the cream off the top- use for icecream, and drink the milk all week-
I see walmart carries it- will have to check if our local grocery store does too-
Is anyone else growing purple beans this season? I am growing one called 'Velour' and have grown it in the past. Granted, the color goes back to green after cooking, but they are pretty when served raw in a salad or with dip.
The teacher only mentioned rheumatoid, as it has an inflammatory component...OA is different (I think we all get, at least, OA). :)
Sounds like the most merciful and yet effective solution going.
I looked up recipes for roasted red pepper “pimiento” cheese & there are quite a few! I am definitely going to try it - roasted red peppers will be easier to find (I saw them while looking for pimientos the other day) & probably cheaper. If I like the way the roasted red pepper cheese spread turns out, I will not be growing/canning pimientos!
