A Mustard Shortage Could Be Hitting the U.S. Soon — Here’s What You Need to Know

Apparently the world’s supply of a favorite hot dog condiment doesn’t cut the … err … mustard. And, as a result, we may be looking at an international mustard shortage sooner than we think.

According to Business Insider, a year of poor mustard seed production is the cause of what may result in a lack of mustard on American grocery store shelves in the near future. Experts say you can thank climate change for the large drop in mustard seed production, with Canada (the world’s second largest producer) and France watching the most recent growing season’s yields fall 28 percent and 50 percent, respectively, because of drought and bad weather. As Russia and Ukraine are also large producers of mustard seeds, the ongoing war isn’t helping the importing efforts either.

Before you start practicing eating your favorite summer meals with just ketchup and relish, however, don’t worry. More than likely, U.S. grocery shelves will still have plenty of the condiment to go around. But how much do you like your spicy yellow add-on? If it’s enough to pay more for it, you may want to prepare yourself as price jumps are being felt around the world.

This news comes on the heels of Huy Fong Foods Inc. bracing its customers this past April that it’s suspending production of cult favorite hot sauce Sriracha (the condiment we put on everything) due to a “severe shortage of chili” from the droughts in Mexico — where they’re grown.

How silly. A jar of mustard lasts months, and you can easily make your own. Discount stores have it, just don't buy the label from John jackass's wife—you know, the one that starts with the letter “H.” French's is by far the best yellow mustard, but Dijon mustard is infinitely better, something you can also make at home. Just put some white wine and a little powdered garlic and allspice. Voila!

Interestingly, in the last year I made the switch from “fancy” mustards to plain ol’ yellow mustard. There is a reason they settled on that formula many decades ago. IMO. BTW, Zero calories.

You can grow and make your own mustard easily.

And, as a bonus, mustard greens to the moon and back.

Blame it on climate change? Sorry, that’s complete bull schiff, just like blaming the Russia-Ukraine war for high gas prices. There seems to be a growing list of shortages. The world is fundamentally eff’d up by leftist globalists that responded to the Wuhan flu in multiple incorrect and business killing ways so they can control the people of the world. All of this crap over a virus that has a mortality rate no greater than 1%. You can be certain that the fine socialists in Canada and France who forced tyranny far greater than what we had in America upon their people are to be blamed for the mustard shortages.

I fear a tyrannical government way more than a crackpot Climate Change theory.

???? They are the same thing or did I miss something.

Gulden mustard is my fav. It is also a source of amusement at dinner, as in “Pass me the Gul-den mustard!”

Noooooo!!!!

Cue the clip of Luke Skywalker after Darth Vader calls him Sonny...

Nooooooo! Mustard is a staple.

Kudos to Free Republic! I am off to Walmart to stock up on large bottles of 40% more French’s Yellow Mustard, with inflation wil soon be 10% less Frenches Yellow Mustard.

I LOVE mustard. I don’t cook hot dogs, I just drown them in yellow mustard and the screaming and flopping around cooks them through and through. lol

Never did like mustard.

“Horseradish is tastier”

Yes it is.

Just with a little bite to it is best.

From that link:

>> However, the mustard plant, where the mustard seeds come from, was first discovered in the Indian subcontinent by archaeologists. <<

Pretty sure that archaeologists did not first discover mustard.

I have some Dijon and some yellow mustard in the fridge. I guess I’m good for a while.

Morehouse is also great. The name brands also make the off brands for outlets such as Smart and Final, Kroger, Albertonsons, and others. Put them side by side in a blind tasting and very few can tell the difference. Frenchs seems to have the most vinegar.
