A diesel shortage -- our next crisis du jour?

It’s one thing for truckers to pass on their high fuel costs -- it is quite another if things don’t get shipped in the first place because there's no fuel.

I pulled into a Walmart gas station in Locust Grove, Virginia, this weekend and lo and behold, there was a sign on all of the pumps informing patrons that they were out of diesel fuel. While my vehicle doesn’t take diesel, it struck me as strange. The signs clearly had been up for at least a day.

After a quick perusal of the internet, I learned a great deal. Time magazine and Reuters both recently reported that the oil industry, in order to produce more gasoline and jet fuel, were compelled to cut back on diesel production. This cutting back on the supply of diesel has helped accelerate the inflation of the price of this type of fuel. When the government gets involved there are always unintended consequences.

One of my social media acquaintances works at an independent trucking company. The high fuel cost had forced them to park their fleet. His company is not alone. You would think that this lack of demand from such actions might impact supply, but apparently that is not the case. If anything, it poses a new threat to our supply chain woes. Adding to a shortage of truck drivers, now we have many not driving at all. You can almost hear the supply chain moaning in agony as a result.

“... there have been several smaller size diesels ... Some or all of these engines are spark ignition.”

Are you saying they squirt the fuel in at the top of the compression stroke per diesel, but have spark plugs as well?

“No. They are completely different fuel systems. Gasoline in a diesel engine will cause significant damage”

I was in Europe once and they ‘upgraded’ my rental to a gasoline car with an automatic. It took me 3 months to later figure out that they likely do that with all Americans.

Look into DEF delete kits. Illegal? Yeah, but then again, so is the EPA.

IT will ruin the engine, however just for informational purposes during a couple extreme cold spells we went through where the temp did not get above -20f for weeks I had to mix gasoline into my diesel to get it to run even with all the antifreeze and normal fuel treatments.

I’ve been told that in some of the really cold climates people will run their diesels on kerosene.

Eventually the government agencies will be the only entities to have access to gas and diesel. An immobile and hungry citizen is no longer a threat to the criminals in DC.

” I find it hard to believe, though, that manufacturers could not reprogram the ECU to eliminate the need for DEF if they could legally do it.”

They easily can and the States may force that issue if the fed continues to be the problem.

However, he may be a VERY serious threat to local democrats!

You said:

“The vehicles are hardwired to require it.”

And then you said regarding reprogramming the ECU:

“Nothing says they can’t...”

Isn’t that a little contradictory?

Diesel supply, urea supply, DEF supply and DEF sensors. The DEF sensors on some trucks are cheaply made and are failing with just 10 months in service. There is a backlog on orders, so trucks with a defective DEF sensor are parked waiting on the part.

Great. My kid is trying to get a job at one of the big flatbed trucking operations.

My son did that. He passed his medical and written CDL licenses, then went to Texas to train with a company. He finished training and hit the road driving loads all over the US. He was making 50% pay to repay the training costs. Much of the time he was living in his company truck. Very little "down time" aside from the ELOG mandated "rest" periods. He thought driving a flatbed would be more steady and better income than his real estate broker work. Reality? He was earning 50% and miserable with the arrangements.

I visit Idaho Falls weekly. Rather than burn extra gas doing 80 MPH on I-15, we saunter up US-91 at 35 to 55 MPH. The road parallels the railroad track. In recent months the track has been updated with fresh ties. The equipment that does that is pretty interesting. There are humans running the equipment, but the bulk of the physical effort is perform by the machines.

You removed the context that additional work in addition to the ECU work is required. You can reprogram an ECU all you want, that doesn't mean more work doesn't need to be done.

7.20 a gallon here now. Was $2.50 a gallon or so, pre child sniffer. It now costs me nearly 20 bucks just to drive to my office.

Yep, Exactly that, spark plug in the cylinder.

Also, the compression is less than that needed for auto ignition so the spark plug is the only way the fuel-air will ignite.

Not only will truckers be affected, but also American agriculture that runs on diesel. Diesel powers tractors, combines, sprayers, fertilizer trucks and the large haul trucks that take produce from field to market. Biden policies could bring not only food shortages but famine.

DC ‘elites’ want gasoline available’ll because they want Biden’s numbers up.

If Truckers can’t deliver product these evil liberal elites think they can blame shortages on Truckers and once again ‘fool their stupid base’. They’ll set up a committee to investigate Truckers - see if anyone is price gouging...
Democrats are such liars.

So long as white liberal ‘elites’ in DC have what they want AND their sexual weirdos and their criminal underclass supporters who prop up their power are happy... Well, then they don’t give a damn if the rest of the people of the United States starve to death.

Outside of DC people can see how awful 'the child sniffer' is - - even blacks who pushed that jerk into office are seeing it.
