...cutting-edge DNA sequencing of more than 400 Viking skeletons from archaeological sites scattered across Europe and Greenland will rewrite the history books as it has shown:The word Viking comes from the Scandinavian term ‘vikingr’ meaning ‘pirate’. The Viking Age generally refers to the period from A.D. 800, a few years after the earliest recorded raid, until the 1050s, a few years before the Norman Conquest of England in 1066... Leif Eriksson is believed to have been the first European to reach North America – 500 years before Christopher Columbus...
- Skeletons from famous Viking burial sites in Scotland were actually local people who could have taken on Viking identities and were buried as Vikings.
- Many Vikings actually had brown hair not blonde hair.
- Viking identity was not limited to people with Scandinavian genetic ancestry. The study shows the genetic history of Scandinavia was influenced by foreign genes from Asia and Southern Europe before the Viking Age.
- Early Viking Age raiding parties were an activity for locals and included close family members.
- The genetic legacy in the UK has left the population with up to six per cent Viking DNA.
They analysed the DNA from the remains from a boat burial in Estonia and discovered four Viking brothers died the same day. The scientists have also revealed male skeletons from a Viking burial site in Orkney, Scotland, were not actually genetically Vikings despite being buried with swords and other Viking memorabilia...
The Picts were Celtic-speaking people who lived in what is today eastern and northern Scotland during the Late British Iron Age and Early Medieval periods...
The genetic legacy of the Viking Age lives on today with six per cent of people of the UK population predicted to have Viking DNA in their genes compared to 10 per cent in Sweden.

Almost nobody in todays’ world is “pure” anything.
It’s like a genetic Hokey Pokey speculation that never really ends.
So basically Vikings were the equivalent of a modern day motorcycle gang. “Hey Olaf, you want to get the guys together and take the boat out to go a viking?” “Viking” was a Scandinavian word for going around on your boat committing piracy.
The same kind of tribes that are “native American” are also in Northern Russia, and migrated there as well.
Brown hair is a mix of red hair and blond. In my youth my hair was blond. As I grew older it became brown. My facial hair , however was red. Mom was a red head.
>> Leif Eriksson is believed to have been the first European to reach North America – 500 years before Christopher Columbus...
Is that possible given the known watercraft of that era?
>> take the boat out to go a viking
lol
“Born to be Vild... Valhalla”
So basically Vikings were the equivalent of a modern day motorcycle gang.
Probably much worse. They killed off whole towns and were small and swift, and built lightweight sea vessels to drag onshore and then go back out to sea with. Not big, Goliath, guys like in the movies or Netflix. Merciless, but intelligent when it came to navigating the oceans.
“They forgot to mention the guy with the Bronx accent who killed the guy with an eyepatch. Great soundtrack from that movie.”
Oh yeah. My favorite movie as a child!
I was watching a link about a Viking museum and they uncovered a Viking ship about 100 feet long and they estimate it could hold 100 men.
The Vikings made it to Iceland and Greenland, I have no doubt they could have made it to America. Some research in Newfoundland has found foundations/ disturbed ground that they say are similar in size and shape to Viking longhouses.
The Vikings were in Ukraine and setup the first organized “government” to unify the area.
Not all Vikings were pirates. Many were craftsmen who designed swords and the chain mail suit, protecting communities. The women didn’t go out and fight with the men as in the Viking series. They had children and provided a comfortable home doing everyday tasks.
“from famous Viking burial sites in Scotland”
It’s well known historically that the Norse invaded Scotland and conquered portions of it, setting up their own kingdoms and even marrying in with the local aristocracy. They did the same thing in parts of England and Ireland as well. So this isn’t any surprise in that area. The actual Norsemen who lived in those areas was probably a rather small percent of the population.
It’s certain. The natives from Virginia north to New England were called redskins, because of their sunburns. They wore much less clothing than the new immigrants from Europe, so the new Europeans had very light skin.
Plus, massive wine grape cultivation all along the coast of Greenland from 900-1150. When Greenland cooled, no more Greenland wine, and so the three-way trade from Iceland to Greenland to Nova Scotia died out, stranding the European blooded further south, from what is now called Nova Scotia to Virginia.
At that length, totally plausible. Appreciated.
Viking timbers were discovered by NY State archaeologists 3 miles north of Albany, NY on a farm. It was in the newspapers with photos.
“Victory or Valhalla” tattoos and other Runic tattoos were commonly found on the AZOV Nazis that surrendered in Mariupol. A lot of western Ukrainians are convinced they’re descended from Vikings and aren’t Slavs at all..

That’s one deadly eyepatch, to be able to kill someone with it.
FTA:
“Early Viking Age raiding parties were an activity for locals and included close family members”.
Akin to today’s 4-H activities.
“Beserkers” were Vikings who earned their dubious reputation by confusing the word order of rape, pillage and burn.
