Eating sea squirts may reverse the signs of aging, study shows (“Plasmalogens” reversed cognitive impairments and gray hair color)

Researchers have reported that supplementing a diet with the sea organisms Ascidiacea, also known as sea squirts, reverses some of the main signs of aging in an animal model.

These sea organisms contain substances called plasmalogens, which are vital to our body processes. Plasmalogens are found all over our bodies naturally, particularly in the heart, brain and immune cells, but as we get older, the amount in our body decreases. This loss is also a characteristic of several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

The researchers studied the effects of adding plasmalogens to the diet of aged mice.

They found profound effects on the learning abilities and physical symptoms of these mice.

Professor Lei Fu, says: "Our research suggests that plasmalogens may not just stop cognitive decline, but may reverse cognitive impairments in the aging brain. Additionally, aged mice fed with the plasmalogens grow new black hair that is thicker and glossier than aged mice not fed the supplement."

Synapses are a fundamental part of our neural networks and, therefore, crucial for learning and memory. Our synapses tend to be very plastic as children, but they decrease in number and deteriorate with age and in neurogenerative diseases, resulting in cognitive impairments.

A further characteristic of getting older is inflammation in the brain. Too much inflammation can have a negative effect on cognitive ability, as the brain's immune system becomes overactive and turns on itself, attacking neurons and preventing synapses from functioning correctly.

In this study, the inflammation in aged mice was greatly decreased in those given plasmalogen supplements compared to those on a normal diet, providing some insight as to why they performed better in learning and memory tasks.

The “Take Charge Of Your Health” Ping List

This potentially high volume ping list is for health articles and studies which describe something you or your doctor, when informed, may be able to immediately implement for your benefit.

Now keeping a new list (“Common/Top Issues”) for conditions expected to only concern at least 1% of the population. Ask to be on either the “Common/Top Issues” or “Everything” list.

Please email or private message me if you want on or off of a list and of which list you desire.

“Ummmm...do they have them in pill form??”

Yes, yes they do.

https://prodrome.com/product/prodromeglia-plasmalogen-softgel-supplement/

They also have some on Amazon, but they are super-tricky about the mg dosage. They refer to “ug”.

The above-link purports to have something like 1000X the active ingredient than the ones you see on Amazon.

I don’t have memory problems, but am a huge proponent of prophylactic use of things likes circumin, superfoods, fish oil, flavanoids, different kinds of collagen, etc.

People think I’m in my late 20s all the time. I’m in my 50s and am beat up from the Army and the NFL.

So do you take this supplement? If so, can you report any improvements in your cognitive function?

I have not, but I ordered it based on this article and subsequent research it inspired me to read.

Given I don’t have issues, I am probably going to take 50% of the recommended dose (1 pill) as it’s $200 for 60 pills.

My interest is more related to heart benefits because that’s what kills people in my family.

My theory is to prevent damage before it becomes symptomatic, so I prophylacticly take all sorts of supplements, heavy on sea, spice, and other plant products.

I’ll tell you in 20 years if this works.

So far, so good. I objectively look/feel very healthy and have good lab work.

I currently take a magnesium omega 3’s vitamin d melatonin and phosphseylcholine for brain health.

I might try this.

Currently I take a brain health supplement called alpha brain.

I just checked the ingredients. One is phosphsesydleserine. So I’ll have to cut way back on this and not renew it.

Looks too like I’ll have to shift from serine to glycine

Please let me know if you find ANYTHING that helps your tinnitus. My husband has it and it can be hard to take at times. We’ve tried different things, but nothing seems to make a dang bit of difference.
