Pieces of ‘fireball’ meteor that exploded over Mississippi are being found, NASA says

Meteorites are not ‘flaming rocks of doom,' NASA says

The “bright fireball” was traveling at 35,000 mph when it exploded at 8:03 a.m. with the “energy equivalent of 3 tons of TNT,” according to NASA Meteor Watch, the agency's project that tracks fireball activity.

“Existing law states that any meteorites belong to the owner of the property on which they fell; out of respect for the privacy of those in the area, we will not disclose the locations of these finds,”

And finding anything of value is likely harder than you think.

“The pieces from this object were way too small to leave a crater. Unlike what you see in the movies, meteorites are not ‘flaming rocks of doom’ that blast holes in the ground. In fact, you can pick one up right after it hits ground. So no smoking rocks in small craters.”

Congrats on the three-row solution!

It’s been a while since I put up a 3.

I’ve had several three-row solutions but only one two-row. Scarce as hen’s teeth. ;o]

Everything went great. Steve was very happy. The ladies would have liked to do more songs, but it was getting pretty hot!

I’m glad Steve was happy about it all. Music is always uplifting.

In other news, the European Vacation isn’t happening. Because American cancelled that flight, it made it impossible for them to go. I tried to suggest things, but I’m just the stupid mom. They would have had time to make that 17 miles from JFK to Newark (5-hour lay-over) if they had just gone ahead and taken ground transportation. NY has some of the best.

But they opted to drive to Memphis to catch a flight to DC and then found out that was even farther from Newark. So at this point, they will be coming home. Perhaps they will brainstorm, perhaps not. But they could have made it work.

But one never tells PW she has options that she hasn’t thought of first.

Somehow, I knew this wasn’t going to happen.

Wow, that’s bizarre. They didn’t know where D.C. was located relative to Newark and JFK?

If I were you, I would look sad, nod, and say, “Uh huh,” a lot.

In other minor weirdness, DP had written “Spaghetti Salad” on the food list for the campout. I would have been happy to prepare Spaghetti Salad, if provided a recipe, but eventually, it turned out that he meant, “Spaghetti and salad,” which is something different.

Sally said, “I thought it was spaghetti salad, too!”

So now I’m making sauce that we can heat up tomorrow evening.

*kof-kof*

I’ll do exactly that. How hard is it to remember that there is such a thing as “ground transportation,” and that a bus or train could have gotten them to Newark in plenty of time. But they won’t hear me say anything but, “Uh-huh,” “Golly,” and maybe a “tsk-tsk” thrown in for good measure. (I wonder whatever happened to “Plan B?”)

Remember, DC isn’t “that far away on a map.”

Sorry. My evil self is really fighting with my mom self.

I suspect the airline will get all the blame. Forever.

Spaghetti salad? That doesn’t sound good, no matter how you plate it. Unless you plate it separately!

I prefer my own sauce, but PW uses Prego, which I find to be quite watery.

Still, I’d kill for some spaghetti right about now.

As long as it’s not you getting the blame! “Uh-huh,” “Golly,” and “I’m very sorry it didn’t work out for you,” as I said about Tom’s (not) going to graduate school.

I suppose any “pasta salad” could be made with spaghetti, but I don’t know why you would. We’re actually going to use other noodles on the campout, anyway!

I read back through the timeline of your family’s travel plans and the decisions they made, and it’s even weirder than I thought. Do you think that, when it came down to it, they didn’t really want to go after all?

LOL!

I think it was just not thought through well enough. I mean, yes, they wanted to see a lot of places, but the big thing, I think, was that this was in some way a birthday gift for himself, seeing the VW factory in Wolfsburg and then stopping in London to visit a “friend” of his who has a TV show over there.

The trip started in Italy, then it was off to France, then Germany, then GB and home. Too many hotels, travel arrangements, etc., and no real idea of what Europe is like these days.

It might have worked if they had concentrated on just the two places, but that doesn’t seem to have been in plans at all. Not even considered.

I had my own thoughts on it and kept my own counsel, because years of abuse have taught me that’s the safest way to go. I doubt very much if I would have been listened to. But the less complicated the itinerary is, the greater chance for success.

To me, “salad” indicates “pieces” of stuff, so if it’s pasta salad, I want pasta pieces. Besides — I like to eat pasta salad with a spoon, so short pasta stuffs.

True on the big picture, but the decision today just seems like self-sabotage. Taking a shuttle from JFK to Newark is obvious and no big deal.

You walk up to the gate agent at Little Rock and say, “My flight from Charlotte to Newark was cancelled, and now we’re going into JFK. What’s the best way to get from there to Newark for our flight to Portugal?”

Then the agent tells you, and you do what the agent says. Even I could do it!

Having worked in transportation for a few years, I know how things work. But they didn’t ask me, and I’m sure I would have been rebuffed unkindly had I offered. So all I can do is sit and watch the sabotage take place.

I agree with you: American was going to send then to JFK and I’m sure any travel agent would have helped them get to Newark.

I went to Pakistan by myself almost 20 years ago, and never had a bit of trouble coming or going. Well, except for Heathrow on the way home, where they wanted me to spend the night in a hotel. With what? I was four days away from payday and they finally allowed me to shelter there.

It was OK, because the police were armed with some pretty good muscle! I was good.

Just saw a post I missed. Newark was socked in so they would have had to spend the night there at the least.

I guess I’ll just have to bide my time and see what’s going on. Surely the airline could have connected them to a flight going to Portugal in time to make their other connections.

So erase the bad things I said about PW. This time. ;o]

Sorry to hear that!

Of course, living in the desert southwest for so long, I adore the dry heat. I’ve had more than my share of rain since I’ve been here.

But I know it is needed, so I try not to complain too loudly or too long.

Maybe tomorrow!

Yeah, thanks.

My son must have edited an earlier post because when I checked to see if there was any further news, I saw that the flight was canceled because Newark was socked in, so the flight to Portugal wouldn’t have happened.

I have no idea what they will do, but I really hope they try to make it work so he can get to Wolfsburg. They’ve been planning this for two years.
