Every couple of years a meteor/bolide blows up in the atmosphere before hitting. In many cases the explosion rivals that of Hiroshima. One was even recorded from an air liner over the Mediterranean (long line at the restroom after that, I bet). Many are also picked up on seismic detectors.
That bits are being found is cool.
