The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. I will admit to getting CHICK FEVER! It’ll only get worse as Tractor Supply and Farm & Fleet get loaded up with live chicks. :(

Beau is not against having chickens, he’s just not gotten AROUND to it, yet.

He went Coyote hunting, today; fresh snow! ;)

100% germination.

Left to right; 4 different types of leaf lettuce, 1 ice queen head lettuce, 1 komatsuma, 1 cabbage, 3 edible pod peas and 2 lincoln peas. Will have to thin the head lettuce/cabbage to one plant.

Also just planted some purple Kohlrabi.

No, I did not save any money, but I did get varieties I want to try growing.

It was a lot of sleet, snow afterward. Sun is shining now and its all melting off. Snow predicted Thursday. I suppose It will affect you too.

A lot of polycarbonate on your Greenhouse! (Are you calling the hail gods to visit you?)

Look forward to a picture of the finished product!

I have always had problems with “Reach” on my seedlings. Multiple trays in a 2’x3’ rack with light on the top one. (Inside the house, one south window available.) Cats can be a problem too.

(With tomatoes you can at least bury them deep and they will develop additional roots. Some people lay them on their sides and bury them. I have not tried that yet!)

Buff Orpington - God’s most perfectly designed chicken for northern climates :)

Barred Rock

And anything in the Wyandotte family of chickens.

Lights should be 2” from the top of the plant as it grows, so move things up or down as needed. 16 hours ON, and 8 hours OFF - which is JUST as important. They need to rest, as if they were growing in Nature and nighttime rolls around.

Not sure about Pollard’s lights, though. That might be too much heat too close to seedlings at all those ‘lumens’ so you’ll have to research that, but still remember to turn them OFF when you go to bed, or use a timer.

Barred Rock; The Misses was given a ceramic barred rock hen before my Grandmother passed. It was given to her by a Norwegian friend. She started collecting shelf chickens after that. Easy to care for, but no eggs and you do need to dust them occasionally.!

Lights are on when I’m awake but I do have a timer on the way. Johnny’s recommends 3-6” for the lights that they sell and mine are comparable in output to theirs. They’re LED so they don’t put out much of any heat. Just lowered to 4” and I also have a tin foil tent over them to reflect more light onto the plants.

Woohoo! I scored 2 boxes of 50 jiffy pellets each 3.99. Also got more seeds. I haven’t used them in ages but your recommendation did it.

Shishito - my favorite pepper. Compact plants and heavy bearers. Still have some chopped up lightly sauteed in olive oil then frozen in small baggies, then in groups in a quart ziploc. Handy to use in a lot of ways, omelettes being the favorite.

That’s a good price. You’ll love Jiffy Pellets!

Granted, you’ll need to re-pot them into bigger containers (soda cups-size) once before they’re big enough to plant (at least I do), but they do an awesome job of growing a really good root structure for the plant, and you can just plop the whole thing into the next size up.

Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy!

Started my 28 pepper plants (some to share!) in them, yesterday. :)

Your recommendation, and those of one other friend, are the reason I’m giving the Shishito peppers a try this season.

I make awesome omelettes, so I’m always looking for tasty fillings for those.

I have a great recipe we love. From a chef even. Simple too, marinated flank steak, blistered peppers and salad.

We used flank steak twice and devoured it. Did not enjoy the skirt steak as much.
