The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
“Less experimentation and growing more of what worked last year, maximizing yield if possible.”
I agree! It’s taken me six years here at my ‘new’ garden, and I have it down to a science.
I’ll try one or two things new every season; usually flowers of some sort, or a new (to me) salad green, or a better way to use my (unheated) greenhouse, but other than that, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! :)
Last year I tried potatoes in a super large patio container. Meh! What I really need to do this year is buy soil for the containers as ours has too much nitrogen. Going to do redskins again and carrots. The root crops don’t do well here and I learned it was the nitrogen. Everything else grows great in this soil . I would love to grow some beautiful long carrots.
For those that didn’t catch my posts late in last weeks thread; I reworked my profile page to include a ton of gardening links and info. Most of it has been collected from the weekly garden threads by freeper Pete from Shawnee Mission. I also added a subject based list of links to the Agriculture folder on my cloud.

Oh, you’ll get BEAUTIFUL potato plants with lots of nitrogen - but no taters, LOL!
Phosphorus, Baby! Phosphorus! :)
I found a seed company that has both Dragon’s Egg & Diva cucumber seeds - both are in stock. I’ll be ordering tomorrow! Thanks for the recommendations :-)
Today, I went seed hunting - quite a few empty slots on the seed displays, especially for the most popular tomato varieties. Other than the cuke seeds (mostly they had “Straight Eight & MarketMore, plus an English cuke), I found some other things I’ll plant: bush beans (never grown them before), scallions, radishes, & kale (my dad is on a kale ‘kick’, big time). I buy my tomatoes & bell peppers in 4-packs at the local nursery ... I’m sure the price has gone up, but last year, they were $1.79/4-pack ... plants are very small, but I don’t have much of a place to start my own seeds. Most of what I got I can sow direct in the ground.
Jalapenos ... wanted the recommended ‘Mucho Nacho’, but no luck here in town .... found some ‘Jalafuego’ which are also 4”, about the same heat as the Muchos, so I bought them. The seed company I’m ordering from didn’t have Muchos - did have Jalafuego ... I could probably order Muchos from another seed company, but I didn’t want to incur shipping cost for one package of seeds (yes, I’m ‘cheap’!). I think the Muchos are “tastier”, per reviews I’ve read. The Jalafuegos are “hotter, larger, & more productive than other jalapenos” and are “medium hot”. Hopefully, I’ll get something besides the little “stubbies” of last year that were so bad, I didn’t make a single batch of jalapeno pepper jelly! I will start these in peat pots - will somehow have to find/make a spot! The generator shed, with a bunch of clean up (hauling away junk) might work - will need a grow light.
Sorry you couldn’t find Mucho Nacho. That is an excellent variety. Glad you got Diva. You’ll love her. ;)
I can’t hardly contain myself because I can start my peppers (inside) on March 4th. All things considered, this winter went pretty fast! No snow and unseasonably WARM until the end of December (mulched my Asparagus on December 24th!) will do that up here. :)
As far as seed starting, I am HOOKED on Jiffy Pellets; expandable, netted peat circles, basically. I’ve been saving the covered plastic containers that salad mixes come in, and they make perfect little ‘greenhouses’ for starting things.
It was a Carrot Cake kind of day around here - but I baked Beer Bread, instead. ;)
Muchos are still on my list .... I’ll end up with them, if not this year, then next (planning ahead already!).
:)
That means he’s building you a dog-proof chicken coop as soon as it’s warm enough, right?
We’re going to Menard’s today to pick up our new porch stair railings. Let’s see if he can get THOSE installed, first.

"Instead, the Great Reset will remake the world -- in Schwab’s words, “to create a more inclusive, resilient and sustainable world going forward,” all the platitudes neatly packed into one sentence. Private property deforms the natural relations between human beings and must be abolished. Private transportation will not be allowed. “Contrary content” in the printing or production of materials will not be permitted, at the cost of access to social media and Internet domains. Fossil fuels will be replaced wholesale by Green technologies. Home gardens will be outlawed. The Christian faith will be gradually suppressed (as is happening today). Vaccines will become mandatory."
Hate to drag a political article into the gardening thread but...
