The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
I live in SE Iowa. WHere are you obtaining the corrugated polyethylene panels and are they clear or colored? Thx
My first attempt at Blueberries. Thx
My favorite cucumber is a variety called “Dragon’s Egg”. It stays sweet, no matter how big it gets. In fact the really ripe ones can be treated like honeydew melons! The fruits are white, which makes them a lot easier to see against the foliage, and are usually eaten when they’re about the size of a lemon. The fruits are also fairly smooth, not spiny like some cucumbers are.

Thanks - they sound delicious!
Thank you! I know we have our work cut out for us at our new home though, but the yard is pretty much a blank slate. I’m considering some of those Vego metal container gardening things. Because age. I certainly don’t think we’ll go as big as our backyard garden here, mainly because my hubby isn’t as interested as in past. I’m hoping to take up window gardening - the new house is the perfect sort of place for that.
re: DIY
An outdoor shelf or steps to take advantage of vertical space would be nice but plywood and 2x4s are too expensive. I won’t be building anything unless it’s from sticks, twine and rocks. Or maybe find something dumpster diving. 🤔
My third year of gardening goals: Less experimentation and growing more of what worked last year, maximizing yield if possible.
Sentinal Hardware in Ashland Missouri. The panels are clear polyethylene, 26" wide for 24" coverage with a 2" lap, old-school barn metal corrugation - like a Ruffles potato chip. I'm not sure of the brand name, but I could find out when I go back down there to pick them up.
Thank you. Went online to get phone number. Just checking prices.
Happy Gardening!

We are getting a coating of ice, so I may or may not have satellite internet over the next 24-48 hours. Just a FYI. Thanks!

Humm. A cat play ground, at least until they decide to play on it!
She gets her melon seed from Bakers Creek!
Yes, she’s a fan of heirlooms, for sure!
I really like Jess and her site & videos are REALLY helpful. I’m so impressed by what she and her husband are doing with their lives.
Gives me HOPE for the future. :)
I told Beau her five points for food sustainability and he told me I’d better get busy then!
You know, he really shouldn’t mock me with his MOUTH FULL! ;)
