He was a good dog and my best friend for over 10 years. I adopted him November 14, 2011 after he retired after a lackluster racing career, winning only 3 races. Although he was retired, he quickly raced into my heart. He was a "bounce", having previously been adopted and returned for potty problems in the house. During his time with me he grabbed a bag of egg noodles from the cabinet and ate them, dragged a bag of flour into the living room and opened it, took a bag of powdered sugar into my bedroom and shook it like a chew toy, destroyed many stuffies, pillows, comforters, coats, books, and shoes, and turned my backyard into a moonscape. Not once did he have potty problems in the house. Until recently when old age crept up on him. It was a good 10 years, but way to short. I miss him dearly.
My heart hurts for you. I’m so sorry. We lost 2 of our babies last year.......a Pug last January and a Chug in August. The tears I feel will never stop. Our Beagle and Pug (crippled) are aging but as long as we have a breath they will be taken care of. You’re an Angel on Earth for taking such good care of your pup and having the patience to let it do the things it just had to do. Dogs deserve owners like you.....they give so much more in return.
Worst of times truly, lost my best girl of 12 years about a year ago and it wrecked me. Have a new buddy boy and girl now and life is good again. Prayers up for you.
My German Shepherd, lo so many years ago, died in my arms. It broke my heart at the time. Because of lifestyle issues, I then had cats for pets ever since. Cats too provide great pleasure to their owners, although actually, they own us. Love my cat Molly. She cracks me up. In fact, I love most animals. If I could have a menagerie of them, I would. The world would be a much more empty place without them.

I am very sorry for the loss of your dear doggie. He is now free from pain and anxiety about moving around, etc.

Our "Boomer" (Golden-Doodle mix) is almost two now. Super smart, super well behaved, and yet still with a puppy's energy. I dont even like to think about the day when he will be gone. Time passes so fast and I know the day will come. I am certain I will be heartbroken.

Condolences. Omicron took my senior poodle Saturday night. It is hard to lose them.
You have my sympathy. It is always hard to lose a beloved pet. Our corgi will be 13 next month, so posts like yours really hit home.

Over the last 20+ years I’ve had four rescued dogs and one I rescued staggering along a roadway on a Sunday. Found a urgent care vet that day and started him on the road to recovery. All are now gone except Archie, and he’ll have to be my last one. Archie was a badly abused dog and it took me around six months to calm his fears of virtually everything that moved or made a sound! He’s cost me a small fortune in Vet bills, but when he finally passes I will feel good that I gave him a long and well cared-for life.
My wife and I tried everything to get the medicine into him. But he could smell it, and he would eat the treats that surrounded it. If we tried to force it down him. he would simply hold it in his mouth and refuse to swallow, and then spit it out at the earliest opportunity he had to do so.

Anyone who’s had a sick dog (or cat?) knows whereof you speak. I stumbled upon a method by chance that works exceptionally well. Go to the Grocery Store and buy a package of tenderized beef patties (not hamburger patties). Carefully flatten out a small chunk of the meat and roll the pill up in it. When the dog indicates he/she is hungry, before giving him anything else, hold out that chunk of raw meat. He’ll scarf it down and be looking for more! Give him a few pieces without the meds. From then on you should have no problem getting those pills in him!
Been where you are. Lost my last one, “Teddy” almost four years ago now. Hang in there.
My wife and I have been adopting senior dogs for about ten years now. Old people die and their old dogs get abandoned or simply thrown away.
We take them and give them the best one, two or three years we can. Sometimes a lot less. One of our most cherished dogs only lasted four months.
It’s heartbreaking and wonderful at the same time.
