This is specifically the #1 precursor, for all the reasons previously mentioned.
Do not be alarmed; be prudent.
What are you seeing in your area?
Feel free to note in the comments section what is happening in your area. Hopefully, most of us are much better positioned than the average person who has not been following this as closely over the past several months.
Initial food instability signs in the supply chain. Things to look for:
(1) A shortage of processed potatoes (frozen specifically).
1.a And/Or a shortage of the ancillary products that are derivatives of, or normally include, potatoes.
(2) A larger than usual footprint of turkey/ham in the supermarket (last lines of protein).
(3) A noticeable increase in the price of citrus products.
(4) A sparse distribution of foodstuffs that rely on flavorings (sports drinks).
(5) The absence of non-seasonal products.
(6) Little to no price difference on the organic comparable (diff supply chain)
(7) Unusual country of origin for fresh product type.
(8) Absence of large container products
(9) Shortage of any ordinary but specific grain derivative item (ex. wheat crackers)
(10) Big brand shortage.
(11) Shortage of wet pet foods
(12) Shortage of complex blended products with multiple ingredients (soups etc)
(13) A consistent shortage of milk products and/or ancillaries.
These notes above are all precursors that show significant stress in the supply chain. Once these issues are consistently visible, we are continue toward food instability very quickly, sector by sector, category by category.
The reason I list the shortage of potatoes as the #1 precursor is because every food outlet sells a potato in some form. Every supermarket and every single restaurant (fancy, sit down or fast food) sells some form of potato. Potatoes are demanded by every single food outlet

A small plot of potatoes provides more calories and nutrition then just about any other plant.
And if you plant your potatoes by themselves it does not look a lot like a garden. Just a bunch of weeds.
Northern NV, spot shortages. Run on paper goods again, missing large quantity packages of just about everything. Otherwise mostly stocked so far but thinly with no depth. A failure of JIT supply chain would kill us in 2 days.
I’ve not seen Claim Jumper pies or Tombstone pizzas in about 2 years.
Yesterday Kroger’s Springfield OH. No raw Potatoes. One dozBrown eggs and a 6 doz pkg of white eggs.
I’m in an alternative food supply chain ... Amish/Mennonite “salvage” groceries. Supplies are good because big store employees are always dropping a pallet, cutting too far with the box cutter or stuff gets too close to the sell-by date :D
Like shopping in Russia, you never know what you will find, and if they’ve got what you want, buy it now because it might not be back.
They carry a couple of Amish brand foods that are good ... Walnut Creek is one and John F. Martin meats. Our local store carries milk from a local start-up dairy in returnable glass bottles. We can also buy from local butcher shops.
Wish everybody had these options.
I think this is all planned. So easy to see how it was done. No coverage on CNN or MSNBC, such a shock.
Could not find pinto beans in jar. Had to buy dries and soak them myself.
Every store in my area is very low on beef/poultry.
Forget sausage and bacon.
Cereal aisle is iffy.
Dairy case sparse.
Plenty of booze to go around though - like the good old starvation commie times.
Could you imagine the msm if a Republican were POTUS?
Everybody who watches CNN/MSNBC is still looking for reasons to hate whitey.
Until it’s supper time....
How will those libs and racists eat now?
My brand of kitty litter was out of stock at Walmart, Chewy and Amazon. I got some from eBay.
An even BIGGER chunk of the food being re-directed would be to our Publik Skrewels.
Now that most classes are back to ‘in person learning’ Taxpayers are back to paying for food for the kids for three meals a day - plus snacks!
“[Walmart] is well-stocked on higher-priced name-brand items, though.”
During the scam-demic I started using the Walmart grocery pick up service. They are one of two grocery stores in my area and I shop the other for their great Loss Leader items every few weeks. Anyhow, it’s AWESOME - saves me SO much time. My store was just rolling it out when covid hit, so they had everything in place. I’ve only had one delay and that was just by a day, so no worries.
I’m benefiting greatly from the Great Value brand shortages. So far they’ve given me name brand and/or bigger packages for the Great Value price, just to get my order filled. Coffee, bacon, wheat bread, some cleaning supplies - you know - the BASICS of life. ;)
You should try their service; you’ll probably score on some items, too.
As far as higher prices - yeah, I’m seeing them increase WEEKLY. Beau likes to have a grapefruit with breakfast in the winter months. A week go I was like, “I am NOT paying $1 EACH for a grapefruit”; most of which will be composted! I just checked the price. They’re up to $1.77 EACH this week. Even the canned went up, which was what I bought as a substitute; but I can get three servings for $1.76.
First Biden was kicking dogs.
Now he wants to starve your cat.
Oh, no!
Isn’t the old adage, “As goes Paducah, so goes the Nation?” :)
I’ve been hoping pets aren’t going hungry, the shelves at Walmart here are pretty bare.
Both my cat and dog don’t eat commercial pet food, because of various allergies. I’ve been making their food for quite a while and it’s not that difficult. I’d be happy to post the recipe, and you can have it just in case you can’t find food for them. And it’s bound to be better for them.
Having a backup plan would be great. Thank you. So far, knock on wood, I’ve had no issues. I just received a 22# bag of Friskies dry for the purrbabies yesterday. Getting low on the canned though.
I’m kicking off tomorrow’s ‘Weekly Garden Thread’ with a discussion on the most nutrient-rich veggies that you can grow. It’s far enough out for a lot of us to plan Victory Gardens for this coming Spring.
Potatoes aren’t one of them - but I plant a lot of potatoes myself and will plant a few more rows next year. Green Beans aren’t either, but I love them, so I’ll plant more of them, too.
It’s a balance between planting what’s good for you and what you’ll actually eat...while we still have that CHOICE, of course! ;)
Petsmart is another source. I avoid buying litter at Amazon. I get the 35# pail of Tidy Cats which runs around $15-$16 at WalMart. I used to buy it at Amazon but now, 3rd party morons have been purchasing elsewhere and then selling on Amazon for $40-$60. I’ll keep ebay in mind now. I never thought about them.
Some carbonated and beer labels were in short supply due to aluminum can shortage. Similar sign, except for the part where your pet shares food.
On canning supplies, lids were not available for an extended period last year. Nobody had them. If you do canning, and you see lids, buy buy buy!
