NASA's New X-Ray Telescope Is A Revolution in Astronomy and Launch Profiles [SpaceX, Van Allen Belt, South Atlantic Anomaly]

NASA's new Imaging X-Ray Polarimetry Explorer spacecraft is a tiny satellite with the unique ability to capture images in X-ray with polarization and timing information for every photon captured. It's designed to operate for 2 years and capture new scientific measurements of some of the most extreme places in the universe with gravitational and magnetic fields that would destroy ordinary matter.

And in an interesting turn of events the satellite switched from the intended launch vehicle to a cheaper option that nobody considered - the Falcon 9. This is the first time we've seen a rocket lauched from a domestic US launch site perform such a large plane change maneuver to reach a target orbit. SpaceX normally launch satellites 10 times more massive, but this tiny satellite opened up new options and allowed this unique launch profile.

Earth’s magnetic field acts like a protective shield around the planet, repelling and trapping charged particles from the Sun. But over South America and the southern Atlantic Ocean, an unusually weak spot in the field – called the South Atlantic Anomaly, or SAA – allows these particles to dip closer to the surface than normal. Currently, the SAA creates no visible impacts on daily life on the surface. However, recent observations and forecasts show that the region is expanding westward and continuing to weaken in intensity. The South Atlantic Anomaly is also of interest to NASA’s Earth scientists.

It’s amazing what he’s accomplished in the past twenty years. Makes me feel like a tree stump, but amazing.

He just seemed to come out of Nowhere, just another rich kid with time on his hands and nothing to do. But WOW!

He’s done amazing things, and has gained my respect. It may not sound like a big deal, that respect from me, but there are very few people I know that have earned it. I don’t know him, but I would very much like to shake his hand and say, “Well done!!”
