Car Manufacturers Target Women With New Warning Lights Reading 'Check Engine, Or Don't, Whatever, It's Probably No Big Deal'

WORLD—Car manufacturers around the world are aiming to increase sales to women by replacing traditional "check engine" lights with new warning lights reading "Check Engine, or don't, whatever, it's probably no big deal."
The warning light will flash when the car's computer detects something seriously wrong with the engine or transmission or other key components of the car, but will assure the female driver that it's not a big deal and they can drive with the light on indefinitely.
"This is a more realistic warning light for the female market," said one executive at Toyota. "Frankly, the other one was getting ignored anyway. At least this time we know women will read it and do exactly what it says." The cars will also display change oil warnings, but they will read, "Change oil whenever it's convenient for you, no rush. You're a busy woman. You do you. #bossmom."
At publishing time, manufacturers had introduced an alternative warning that reads "Ask your husband to check the engine."

I was in Laughlin Nevada which also has California on one side of the city. That is where my Check Engine light came on. In California it is against the law to lend out the OBD units which can tell you the issue. So I simply drove to the Auto Zone on the Nevada side and got my reading there.

Maybe you need a “Check engine: this time it’s really serious” light.

So, the low tire pressure light means what, exactly?

Finally a funny one from the BB.
very sexist...I like it.
My wife has a scan tool in her console to plug in herself to check engine lights.

Well, FReeper ladies are obviously an exception.

It means, “G*d dammit, now I have to get some quarters and go to an air pump when I hardly have the time!”
That’s what it means.

I hate the whole concept of the check engine light. It could be anything from a shot engine to a loose gas cap. Did anyone consider, in this day and age, that maybe more nuanced lights could show up on your dashboard?

On one hand they are actually right.
Most of the time when the warning lights come on it is "an electrical problem" which means one of the sensors went bad and it will cost you a boat load to fix but does not really have anything to do with how your car is running.
So most people, especially young people, just ignore it.
Because the signal to noise ratio is off.
Which is why I like my 1985 Ranger.
If a warning light goes off, there is actually something wrong.

That’s the second recent article that the BB has been kinda lame. Maybe some body’s kid got hold of the parents pass word.

I remember 40 years ago, one of my mother's friends had a 1981 Cadillac and if there was something wrong, the computer would show a two digit LED number on the dashboard and you had to look it up in a book. I always thought the same thing, either put in a LED display to flash a code or even a screen to just tell what's going on.

It’s illegal to loan out the OBD units in California? Sheesh, it’s like you’re living in North Korea.
