Ancient 'untouched' tomb discovered on Dingle Peninsula [Bronze Age, County Kerry, Ireland]

An ancient tomb, described by archaeologists as "untouched" and "highly unusual" has been discovered on the Dingle Peninsula in Co Kerry...

The tomb was uncovered by a digger during land reclamation work when a large stone slab was upturned, revealing a slab-lined chamber beneath.

On closer inspection an adjoining sub-chamber was found at what appears to be the front of the tomb.

The tomb contained an unusual smooth oval-shaped stone and what is believed to be human bone.

It is believed the tomb may date to the Bronze Age (2000BC-500BC), but it could be even earlier as it displays a number of highly unusual features...

"Given its location, orientation and the existence of the large slab your initial thought is this is a Bronze Age tomb.

"But the design of this particular tomb is not like any of the other Bronze Age burial sites we have here," said Micheal O Coileain...

"This tomb appears to be completely untouched and in its original state and contains human remains.

"That is very rare. It is an extremely significant find as the original structure has been preserved and not interfered with, as may have occurred in the case of other uncovered tomb," he said.

also the landscape (at least in cork) is dotted with ringforts, which were built from the bronze age through to 1000 ad. they consisted of earthen walls enclosing a small settlement with farm animals. my understanding is that almost none of them have been archaeologically excavated. nowadays they are usually considered unlucky and avoided by people.

The new, legit uploads to YT have that Timeline host’s intro, which I generally speed right through.

Over the years I’ve posted links to a number of Time Team vids, and some of Tony’s.

It must have been important to the living to go to that much trouble. I wonder if it doesn’t turn out to be a charnel house.

My Mother showed me a whole area with these rock constructions out near Dingle. They lookes like constructed cave entrances but didn’t seem t go very deep. You are right the locals stay away from these locations.
