In a seemingly paradoxical study, US researchers found that redheads have a preternaturally high pain tolerance — wait for it — due to a mechanism that ups their susceptibility to sunburns.
“These findings describe the mechanistic basis behind earlier evidence suggesting varied pain thresholds in different pigmentation backgrounds,” said Dr. David Fisher of the Massachusetts General Hospital in Massachusetts. He led the fiery study published in the journal Science Advances.
The research found that the cells that determine skin color — called melanocytes — play a large role in deciding how people experience pain.

They are more pain donors, than pain recipients?
For some reason, redheads run in my family... Must be the Irish... ;o]
I bet they do! /rimshot
I am so much the opposite of that. Couldn’t wear braces because of the rubber band pain. Little cuts and what not stop me from doing anything productive.
The doctor told her that redheads have more yeast infections.
At the time the pain and suffering felt worth it though.

Kudos, that was close to genius.
I once dated a red headed hairdresser
I am so stealing that and sending it to my redheaded girlfriend. No shit, we’re both gingers. Well, I’m more silver now.
Agree and Amen!
Overheard:
Soooo, the the carpet match the drapes?
Dunno. She had hardwood floors...
I don’t fit all those generalizations-yes, I have red hair-medium shade-not ginger-light olive skin, no freckles, I do burn, but only after an hour or so exposed-gray/green eyes-definitely higher than normal pain threshold, absolutely no tolerance for drugs and very little for alcohol-I’m Hispanic-ancestors were Spanish Basques, no Irish/Scots in the woodpile that I know of-not Vikings, either, but a few Native Americans. I have a really bad temper-but I’m pretty sure that is due to my Latin ancestry, not my hair...
And I do have a soul...
My husband and daughter are redheads and I am a brunette. The three of us have the highest pain thresholds in the family. The three of us deal with chronic pain as well. Either we’ve gotten used to it over the years or it’s genetic.
“They need a higher quantity of anasthaesia to achieve the same effect during surgery.”
I agree...my sister (redhead) can only take certain pain pills because certain ones don’t work on her at all...my dad doesn’t even bother with any pain killer even with a root canal because it doesn’t affect him and he still feels all the pain.
“...study I read years ago..redheads were more sensitive to pain....”
I was told this as a child coming from a 100% Scots Irish tribe...and had this confirmed by higher education and continued readings....until today.
At first I thought it was another pesky Mandela Effect, as I found lots of egghead results affirming this thread.
However, this NY Post lay summary I provide as a link resolved my Mandela Effect and maybe yours.

Early studies and experiences were witnessing redhead’s resistance to painkillers, thereby feeling more pain. Their greater sensitivity to hot and cold was also long noted.
Newer more thorough studies find that while more sensitive to environmental discomfort, they handle it much better. They can take more discomfort, even though they feel it.
So my conflict is resolved. I hope this might help yours as well.
Nothing should be forever save the relentless pursuit of truth.
Thanks!
I collect souls so that when I meet a new redhead, I can give her one of those rather than parcel out my own.
They never seem to mind.
Gingers have no soul. :)
So redheads are accident prone. ;-)
