Known as a termopolium, Latin for hot drinks counter, the shop was discovered in the archaeological park's Regio V site, which is not yet open the public, and unveiled on Saturday.
Traces of nearly 2,000-year-old food were found in some of the deep terra cotta jars containing hot food which the shop keeper lowered into a counter with circular holes.
Archaeologists also found a decorated bronze drinking bowl known as a patera, ceramic jars used for cooking stews and soups, wine flasks and amphora.
Pompeii, 23 km (14 miles) southeast of Naples, was home to about 13,000 people...

Been there ... what an awesome place!
Much larger than I envisioned, and be aware most of the streets are very cobbly and put a real strain on the knees and ankles.
I arrived later in the day but after 3 hours had enough, but I shall return!

The Twinkieums were still fresh.
LOL, when I visited Pompeii a few years ago, my first thought was “Dude, this is where Pink Floyd played.”
Great point.
These were a big surprise for their brightness and preserved detail.
Little did these poor people know that their lives would come roaring back to life 2000 years after they were buried in volcanic ash.
"Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya"
Gas Station Convenience Store CEO:"I got my bid in ahead of the other stores. We should have the food repackaged, with altered expiration dates, and in our stores for customer sales by Monday."
Does anybody remember the great comedy cop show Sledge Hammer? He tried forcing a reluctant thug to talk by forcing him to eat packaged food at the convenience store---all outdated but still being sold. Funny.
I once grabbed a candy bar and bought it on the way out of a Valero station. I opened it and it was mostly powder pieces. Date on it was a year and a half expired. Clerk gave me a more recent vintage replacement.
No fries. Only chips.
It was full of Claxton Fruit Cake they didn't sell.
dfwgator,
You did a great Cuomo impersonation.....
Happy New Year!

You’re looking in the wrong place. Try the Castro district of San Francisco. Unless Pompeii had a Castro district.
It’s all Greek to me.
About fifty four years ago, LIFE MAGAZINE ran a series of articles on Ancient Rome.
One of the illustrations showed a stall the same as this but it showed the holes to be used to keep wine amphorae upright. It also showed two winos getting ready to punch each other out when the shop keeper stops them.
The magazine article illustrations were much better than the LIFE book on ancient Rome.
According to Suetonius, Tiberius used to dine with an old Roman who had his slave girls serve the food buck naked.
OLD GOAT! Why can’t some of today’s eateries do the same!
Chips with garum dipping sauce. Yum, yum
Sledge Hammer was great comedy.
It deserved at least one more season.
I keep dehydrated Habanero peppers (I prepare them from fresh) and use them for really great Mexican food dishes. Next to Hatch Green Chili’s; Habanero Peppers have the best flavor.
A little bit will go a long way. 1/4 of a dried Habanero pepper will easily flavor a large can of Hominy. But it is amazing.
place in 19 70
Totally amazing. That would catch anyone’s eye!
I wonder if they will find gelato shops too..
Saw some ruins that had ovens and hearths and such at Pompeii, makes ya wonder what else is buried under the Herculaneum site that has seen the area rebuilt.
Like to be able to go back and see what else they have dug up every 10 years or so.
