About fifty four years ago, LIFE MAGAZINE ran a series of articles on Ancient Rome.
One of the illustrations showed a stall the same as this but it showed the holes to be used to keep wine amphorae upright. It also showed two winos getting ready to punch each other out when the shop keeper stops them.
The magazine article illustrations were much better than the LIFE book on ancient Rome.
Pompeii is the best window into daily Roman life and ordinary Romans that is known to exist. Its political election graffiti show that nothing has changed in politics.
IIRC, the buried ruins were not rediscovered until the 18th Century. All previous memory of the Vesuvio eruption and of Pompeii itself had ceased to exist.
