Why Are Links Not Working?
FreeRepublic ^ | Today | OneVike

Posted on 11/26/2020 7:37:04 PM PST by OneVike

I have been posting articles on FR off and on for 22 years, and in that time I have become very good at using HTML to create the type of posts I like. Yet ever since FR changed the carrier of the site, none of my links work on articles I post. I have not changed what I use as HTML code, it's just that what I use does not work on FR any more. And not only links, but much of the HTML on my profile page is all screwed up as well.

Is there a logical reason for this?

I just looked at the page source and it seems the double quotes is a function of FGR. all links have double quotes

Mac users can disable smart quotes system-wide by visiting Apple Menu > System Preferences > Keyboard > Text, then unchecking “Use smart quotes and dashes.”

Well, it’s late. I’ll try using note pad to create my post and then post it. If it works thats the problem but I doubt it’s the problem. But right now I’ll try anything.

I’ll ping you tomorrow and let you see what I post.

It’s bed time for Bonzo.

Thanks for the suggestions and concerns.

Ok, I disabled it. I’ll post something tomorrow as a test and see what happened. I’ll also try using note pad as some have suggested.

Thanks, and I’ll ping you tomorrow and let you see the results with the hopes one of these things helps.

Yet I still doubt either is the problem, but ya never knew know

God bless and thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Yeah. The FR plain-text to HTML interpretation, seems to be only seeing the right, closing, double-quotes. And . . . is using plain, upright double-quotes to affect a quoted form (like encapsulating a string of characters separated by spaces).

Here is a list of double-quotes HTML codes. I'm going to include spaces, so the text shows; followed by another row, not including such spaces.

The problem characters should appear to be different. These are all right closing double-quotes, or plain upright double-quotes:

& quot ; "

" "

Those look the same to me.

- - - - - - -

& # 34 ; "

" "

Those look the same to me.

- - - - - - -

& # 132 ; „

„ „

Those do NOT look the same to me.

- - - - - - -

& # 148 ; ”

” ”

Those do NOT look the same to me.

- - - - - - -

& # 168 ; ¨

¨ ¨

Those look the same to me. (I am not sure what that symbol is.)

- - - - - - -

FR sees 132 and 148 as some other, right, double-quotes character, that is not a part of the traditional 1 thru 255 HTML code.

In case there remains any confusion: don’t use curly quote marks, use straight ones in your links.

Three more examples.

- - - - - - -

& # 8221 ; ”

” ”

Those look the same to me.

- - - - - - -

& # 8222 ; „

„ „

Those look the same to me.

- - - - - - -

& # 8243 ; ″

″ ″

Those look the same to me.

- - - - - - -

And all three of those examples, look the same to me.

That and they can’t figure out which bathroom to use so I’m not too concerned about them figuring how to use a Firearm.

I see that in OpenOffice Writer your HTML tags have typographical quotes (”curly quotes”) where they should be plain quotes. “Intelligent” word processors will trash your HTML, you should use Notepad (or a similar text editor) that is more literal. If this worked in the past, it was a corrective case on our end which seems to have not adapted to recent changes. (Long story short, we went from using Latin1 to UTF-8 character sets, and both Latin1 and UTF-8 have their own idea of what constitutes a curly quote, and they are different!)

Exactly. Like I said I changed nothing, and this is the second time this has happened.

Just what do you mean? Links work fine as before if correctly coded.

Wow, that sounds like what is happening to my posts. See, I code the HTML in my word program and then copy it over to FRs posting page and I even test the links in preview before posting. Everything works in Preview, but after I hit post the links are all broken.

What I do is to save the document (wrote in Apache or Libre Office) as a web page (html) and then load it in a separate Firefox-type browser, and then select the section I want to copy, then right click in it and choose "View selection source" and copy and paste that. For instance, that is just what i did for the below

true believers are accepted in the Beloved, and positionally seated together with Him in Heaven, and have boldness to enter into the holy of holies, (Eph. 1:6; 2:6; Heb. 10:19; cf. Phil. 3:21) and will go to be with the Lord at death or at His return. . (Lk. 23:43 [cf. 2Cor. 12:4; Rv. 2:7]; Phil 1:23; 2Cor. 5:8 [“we”]; 1Cor. 15:51ff'; 1Thess. 4:17) Note in the latter case all believers were assured that if the Lord returned, which they expected in their lifetime, so would they “ever be with the Lord.” (1Thes. 4:17) though they were still undergoing growth in grace, as was Paul, who expressed he would go to be with the Lord at death, yet was not already perfect. (Phil. 3:10f)

And with the only suffering for believers that is manifestly taught as after this life being that of the judgment seat of Christ, which does not begin at death, but awaits the Lord's return, (1 Corinthians 4:5; 2 Timothy. 4:1,8; Revelation 11:18; Matthew 25:31-46; 1 Peter 1:7; 5:4) and is the suffering of the loss of rewards (and the Lord's displeasure) due to the manner of material one built the church with, which one is saved despite the loss of such, not because of. (1 Corinthians 3:8ff)

It would fine, unless copying internal links on a page,as in a table of contents. That never worked unless I edited them. Below is a table of contents form this page that I just copied as above:

TABLE OF CONTENTS (click on titles in Web version)

1. Two books of the Bible are named after women.

6. Women first to share good news.

11. Aquilla and Priscilla co-pastors

16. Woman to learn in silence not applicable.

2. Redemption negates these effects of the fall.

7. Old Testament male positional supremacy abolished.

12. Women were fellow preachers with Paul.

17. All Christians exhorted to teach.

3. Male pronoun universal.

8. John ch. 4; Use of women evangelist allows being a pastor.

13. Women in church prophesying/preaching

18. Requirement for female silence not universal.

4. Deborah a womenjudge.

9. God is no respecter of persons.

14. Speech restrictions on women not applicable..

19. Requirements for bishops not gender specific.

5. Female prophets = pastors over men.

10. Women pastored church in Phillippi

15. No difference between male or female.

20. Abigail

21. 1 Cor. 14:34, 35

22. Commentaries

I just remembered a short mail message I sent to jim Robinson shortly after the changeover occurred. This may explain why I am suspicion of quotes in FR. The problem I pointed out to Jim was gone in a day or two. TM code refers to Trademark Code. Here is the one sentence message:

Special Characters

To Jim Robinson | 11/15/2020 10:48:59 AM PST sent

Jim: You probably already know this but things like quotation marks are not posting correctly after your move. What posts is the funny TM code.

It’s most likely a change in how “Smart Quotes” (both single and double) are handled (and UTF8) since the server migration. I’ve noticed that posting links using my regular computer (where Smart Sh*t is all turned off) still works fine, but on my iPad, which loves using Smart Sh*t, I have to delete the quotes from my link HREF and image SRC strings, or else the links and images don’t work.
Mac user here. My experience of smart quotes is that if I copy <a href=""> into my reply, I can paste the label of the link first and then paste the target URL between the quote marks, and the link will work. If OTOH I paste the target URL between the quote marks first, and then paste the label of the link in its place, the trailing quote mark after the URL gets “smart” - with the result that my link, and sometimes some following text, disappear when I do a preview.

When that happens, tho, I can cure it by simply deleting the (trailing) smart quote and hitting the “ key. Then the link shows up in preview, and is functional.

Thanks, After a good rest I am back at it, and will try to incorporate your suggestions to see if things work out as I hope.

I need to do a full post,or more, since the only time I have a problem is when I post an article I wrote, and the preview showed all is OK, but once it is officially posted is when the problem occurs.

So I am working on a short commentary, and I will do so first off in note pad instead of my Word program

I’ll give you a ping when I have it up

OH WOW!

Yes, that would explain the problem.

Thanks John.

I was advised by others to use notepad, So I wil try it. I am currently working on another Commentary and will give you a heads up if I still have a problem.l

Question, if note pad does fix the problem, is there another Word program I could use besides Open Office for my MAC that would work with the new system?

I dislike note pad since it is limited in its functions, but I also want to get back to posting things I write that works.

One more thing, is the new system the reason when I go into editing my profile page that everything is jumbled up in one long paragraph view so it makes it difficult to find things I want to edit?

It used to keep the HTML in a systematic order for us to easily find and change things, now is HTML hell to locate something I need to change.

I realize I have an extensive Profile page, but I was wanting to use it as a blog to post my articles and things on so no one has to leave FR and cut down on the nasty comments some FReepers seem to use when attacking bloggers.
