Mysterious magnetic pulses discovered on Mars
National Geographic ^ | PUBLISHED September 20, 2019 | Robin George Andrews

At midnight on Mars, the red planet’s magnetic field sometimes starts to pulsate in ways that have never before been observed. The cause is currently unknown.

That’s just one of the stunning preliminary findings from NASA’s very first robotic geophysicist there, the InSight lander. Since touching down in November 2018, this spacecraft has been gathering intel to help scientists better understand our neighboring planet’s innards and evolution, such as taking the temperature of its upper crust, recording the sounds of alien quakes, and measuring the strength and direction of the planet’s magnetic field.

As revealed during a handful of presentations this week at a joint meeting of the European Planetary Science Congress and the American Astronomical Society, the early data suggest the magnetic machinations of Mars are marvelously mad.

In addition to the odd magnetic pulsations, the lander’s data show that the Martian crust is far more powerfully magnetic than scientists expected. What’s more, the lander has picked up on a very peculiar electrically conductive layer, about 2.5 miles thick, deep beneath the planet’s surface. It’s far too early to say with any certainty, but there is a chance that this layer could represent a global reservoir of liquid water.

“better understand our neighboring planet’s innards and evolution, such as taking the temperature of its upper crust, recording the sounds of alien quakes”

The stupid “journalists” and their stupid editors could not even use the appropriate term Mars quakes (which is the equal of our “earth quakes”), but instead chose the idiotic term “alien quakes” as if some creatures alien to Mars cause them.

“Mysterious” makes things sound like there is not a natural explanation for something. It should not be “mysterious” at all that many conditions on Mars cannot be explained by our understanding of our Earth. That does not mean there are not natural reasons for what we observe on Mars. It only means we are not yet smart in the ways of Mars; another non-mystery.

It would make for a great Sci-Fi mystery show!

Thanks to you and a couple of others who responded, yes I have attempted to publish, and I have also placed the theory on line in a less rigorous format where it could be read by any scientist (not hidden away in a self-contained blog but on large forums with science sub-forums).

Never received any actual critique of the theory, which may mean it has some merit, although I would be first to admit, difficult to prove unless let’s say somebody on Mars or the Moon stumbles across obvious evidence that I’m right.

One detail I didn’t mention was that the binding force of various atoms weakens gradually the larger the atoms become, in a graphical format, these binding energy values fall fairly close to the line which would theoretically join up with the larger gravitational forces.

I haven’t developed any “empirical observational proof”, it is just a concept which once grasped you can either accept or reject, that G is not constant but varies with the central mass of any given field. Here on earth, experiments are conducted within that larger field, so it’s not clear whether they really demonstrate anything about constant or variable G.

The product G*M in any case would be the same as we now believe (it is indirectly derived by studying the orbital speed of satellites), so if G increases for lower mass than earth, and decreases for higher mass, then the masses involved would (a) increase for more massive objects and (b) decrease for less massive objects, in order to maintain the validity of the products G*M.

For the electro-magnetic force, mass is much smaller obviously so G must be much larger. I don’t have the figures in front of me but I recall that the electro-magnetic force in a hydrogen atom is 10^53 times G, or something similar. But for larger atoms with many electron rings, the binding energies indicate that the operating force for those has already fallen off to 1% of hydrogen, on a gradual downswing that ends up in the astronomical object range. My data points were based on whatever closest fit line from the hydrogen atom to earth’s known value of G (known to the extent that we know the mass of the earth, itself a conjecture). And it hit the mass of Mars at exactly 1.1, just enough larger than water’s 1.0 to suggest a 30-50 km crust surrounding a large water world (like Europa, so not that far-fetched).

For Venus, its similar mass to earth would only reduce the assumed mass slightly and in any case we were estimating that more from analogies than observed forces as Venus has no orbiting satellites.

Another thing in favor of this alternate view is that there is no longer missing mass. The galaxies are all hundreds of times more massive than we thought.

Maybe its a result of the huge plasma discharges that raked certain areas of Mars in its geologic history.

From Far Barsoom ( Mars) :

John Carter:

“The Jeddak of Zodanga means to quash Helium this very night, and if Helium falls, so does Barsoom. We must throw out the thought of old hatreds. Tharks did not cause this, but by Issus, Tharks will end it! We ride for Zodanga! “

Dr. Oliver Manuel who served as the principle investigator in NASA’s lunar program, claimed the Sun is mostly an iron encrusted neutron star covered with a hydrogen atmosphere, formed of remnant materials from a supernova. Have fun.

What’s strange is that these Martian wobbles happen at local midnight, as if responding to the demands of an unseen, nocturnal timer.

PIF: Correct. That’s when Mars’ gravity wave generator is pointed towards its long vanished target, gone nearly a billion years now. See 41

But the "midnight" repeatedly mentioned in this article is always referring to local midnight - i.e., when it is midnight at the longitude of InSight.

There is nothing "special" about that particular landing site nor about its local midnight - InSight could just as easily landed at any other longitude; it would then have still registered this phenomenon (your "gravity wave generator") at its (other) local midnight.

Thus, this phenomenon could be better described as constantly occurring at that side of Mars momentarily opposite to / farthest from the Sun. Which also means that your "gravity wave generator" is not pointing at any fixed target, since Mars revolves around the Sun once every Martian year (approx. 1.88 Earth years).

Think: Welding a machine gun to a Merry-Go-Round, facing outwards, and then setting the Merry-Go-Round into motion.

Even if your "gravity wave generator" were restricted only to InSight's lcoation, it still holds that Mars is constantly revolving around the Sun, and so that local, InSight-specific "gravity wave generator" would be pointing to a different direction of the Martian sky every midnight.

For the electro-magnetic force, mass is much smaller obviously so G must be much larger.

You're getting ahead of yourself and already assuming that a GUT (Grand Unified Theory) will be found. At present, that's still a speculation. For the time being, you should consider gravity, the electro-weak force (combined electromagnetic and weak - see Glashow, Salam, and Weinburg / 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics), and the strong force to be separate.

No, looks more like a rather generic screenshot from "Total Recall." Have no idea what significance it is supposed to have in the context of this discussion - except that the film is about Mars.

It took me all of 2 minutes to come up with the idea, type and post it. It was a joke idea, not meant to be taken seriously.

Going further: what is now going on with this Martian mystery is not relatable to what it was a billion years ago - we only see the remnants, the ghost. Inferring conclusions based on present-day data will always be wrong and misleading.

A billion years ago the solar system was very likely a totally different place than it is now. We have learned that the current solar system is an anomaly to all other systems discovered to date. Most other systems seem to have the gas giants close to the star, with large earth-sized moons. This arrangement is in keeping with the electric universe theory.

What happened to our solar system to cause the disparity we live in today? Some great war? Some experiment gone horribly wrong? Something that caused both the Moon and Mars to have two distinct surface boundaries - one heavily pitted with craters and the other relatively smooth?

Science data without imagination is just dull.

I was looking for Forbidden Planet artwork, but I'm not sure that's what I found. It didn't really matter, since I was trying to depict the concept of Mars being a gigantic machine of some kind, as was Altair IV in the movie.
