Warm weather pushed Neanderthals into cannibalism
Cosmos Magazine ^ | March 29, 2019 | Dyani Lewis

In the 1990s, the remains of six Neanderthals -- two adults, two adolescents and two children -- were found in a small cave at Baume Moula-Guercy in the Rhône valley in southern France.

The bones bear many of the hallmarks of cannibalism: cut marks made by stone tools, complete dismemberment of the individuals, and finger bones that look as if they've been gnawed by Neanderthal teeth, rather than by other carnivores.

Remains from other sites in Croatia, Spain and Belgium also show evidence of cannibalism. But in each case, there has been a lack of evidence to answer the question of why the Neanderthals engaged in the practice. Was it for nourishment or cultural ritual?

"Cannibalism is always a contentious thing, because we find it quite revolting," says archaeologist Michelle Langley from Griffith University in Australia, who was not involved in the study...

What they found was evidence of a rapid change in climate that drastically altered the environment of the Rhône Valley.

Before and after the warming, remains from reindeer and woolly mammoths are found, accompanied by smaller mice and lemmings. During the warmer period when the Neanderthals lived, the area was devoid of large mammals, instead inhabited by rodents and tortoises and snakes that migrated up from the Mediterranean.

“bones have cut and gnaw marks on them” = observation
“must have been due to cannibalism “= conjecture

Which one is science and which one is fiction?

Or it could have been it was in the dead of winter and this was the original Donner party or it could have been Jeffery Dahmer’s ancestor or it could have been a hundred other reasons.

I’m sure they’ll be able to expose the motivation once they’ve consulted with their creative energy god (evolution) symbolized by the serpent from ancient times.

I guess we better watch out for leftists if it warms up a little.

I think the leftists should watch out for me. At the first hunger pang, I tend to think that there's at least one way in which a liberal can be useful...

Kind of like the Fat Mountain Lion that was discussing his eating habits with a skinny Mountain Lion.

FML- “What do you eat?”
SML- “I eat 2 Liberals a day”
FML- “I eat 2 Liberals a day, how do you prepare them?”
SML- “I come up behind them, let out a roar to stun them then pounce on them and eat them”
FML- “That is your problem. When you roar you scare the ‘$hiite’ out of them and when you pounce you knock all the hot air out of them and all that is left is a beanie and a pair of tennis shoes”.

Not to be confused with the young and old bull standing on a hill and observing a field full of cows....

YB- “Lets run down there and ‘get us’ a couple of them fat heifers”
OB- “Nah, lets walk down there and ‘get them all’.

Which one is science and which one is fiction?

Well, if the knaw marks appear to have been made by human teeth (careful observation)...

Also, if the cut marks were made by a sharp blade applied in a striking motion, that might be inconclusive. Blade marks made by apparent "dining" would be more definitive. All this can be determined by expert forensic study (observation) which is really quite good, in 2019....

Now, trying to stretch apparent cannibalism into being due to warmer temps... That is conjecture, and weak conjecture at that.

that's probably the main reason for the prohibition of eating pork, imho).

Carried mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Eating them meant death.

Check out the Kosher Inspection, lookiong for the tubercles.

Tortoises are land animals, they drown if you put them in water. Just how did they "migrate" from A to B at a speed of about 100 yards/day? Sorry, guys.

They had no knowledge of microbiology in ancient times, when the food laws arose. ANY animal has to be inspected (irrespective of keeping kosher, or halal) for signs of illness. Also, besides the low rate of TB in pigs (.4%) there's no transmission to humans from pigs. * It's a good guess that prehistoric hunting skills improved in order to nick the healthiest member of the herd of whatever game was being hunted.

I’ll see your forensic science and raise you unobserved conclusions- what tool/knife type was used? Are we even certain these are human(oid???) bones and how was the age determined? How were the gnaw marks determined to be of the same creature type that the bones were- all unobserved conjectures. As a scientist/engineer, I am very skeptical of that which is concluded on by assumption- I once saw a bridge built with certain assumption....they were wrong, with deadly conclusions; glad it was in a South American country and not ours.

Use caution when a cannibal wants to take you to lunch.

truth is that the cannibalism was the result of Neanderthal man discovering and implementing the philosophies of socialism. eventually things got so bad that Neanderthal man took to cannibalism when it was discovered that lots of hunters wont hunt if they could get a share another hunters kill and the hunters were so mad that a 1/3 of there kills were going to hunters who would not hunt so they fled the area and left the lazy hunters and there Trible chiefs who after years of not hunting did not no how to hunt and ended up killing those hunters that stayed for meat eventually collapsing mans first foray into socialism
