Warm weather pushed Neanderthals into cannibalism

In the 1990s, the remains of six Neanderthals -- two adults, two adolescents and two children -- were found in a small cave at Baume Moula-Guercy in the Rhône valley in southern France.

The bones bear many of the hallmarks of cannibalism: cut marks made by stone tools, complete dismemberment of the individuals, and finger bones that look as if they've been gnawed by Neanderthal teeth, rather than by other carnivores.

Remains from other sites in Croatia, Spain and Belgium also show evidence of cannibalism. But in each case, there has been a lack of evidence to answer the question of why the Neanderthals engaged in the practice. Was it for nourishment or cultural ritual?

"Cannibalism is always a contentious thing, because we find it quite revolting," says archaeologist Michelle Langley from Griffith University in Australia, who was not involved in the study...

What they found was evidence of a rapid change in climate that drastically altered the environment of the Rhône Valley.

Before and after the warming, remains from reindeer and woolly mammoths are found, accompanied by smaller mice and lemmings. During the warmer period when the Neanderthals lived, the area was devoid of large mammals, instead inhabited by rodents and tortoises and snakes that migrated up from the Mediterranean.

Wait, what's Vault-Co?
The idea of cannibalism having been rare has always suggested that it may have been outsiders or rather other human types (including moderns, who are known to have practiced cannibalism for a long, long time -- that's probably the main reason for the prohibition of eating pork, imho). Some of the early hominids developed a practice of finding a nice small nook or cranny to sleep in, and collected rocks to pile up in the entrance so they could get some sleep without being konked and eaten, or eaten by other predators.

Yeah, I was just thinking what with moving into warmer weather and outdoor BarBQs heating up, entire families might disappear, especially at block parties or progressive dinners!

Wonderful way to rid your life of repulsive progressive family members - serve them at family dinners !

I didn’t really say what I meant very clearly. People eating other people is very old. My point was it didn’t die out. It continues to this day. It may be morbid, but is in no way ended. Sorry I was ambiguous.

Doubtless they sacrificed humans to the blood-thirsty serpentine gods and goddesses of the great mystery religion-—Sustainability, Warming, Cooling, Change.

Maybe they should have started fishing/netting/spearing in the pristine waters of the Rhone River?

Plus, warmer weather means more edible plants, fruits, berries, nuts.

Anyway, unless they had extreme drought, too, it’s pretty hard to starve to death in a river valley in warm temperatures.

Two cannibals are sitting down to dinner and tonight are eating a clown. One turns to the other and asks “ does this taste funny to you?”

Lies. How in the world could the climate have changed in a time when there were few humans and no modern conveniences, since that’s what we’re told causes the climate to change..

Cold climate caused modern day humans to cannibalize each other when that plane crashed in the Andes Mountains.

Not sure I buy the climate change argument. This just doesn’t make any sense.

I have a solution. Move up north, your dinner will walk out of the bush and right into your gun site. No need to eat your neighbors or family.

I’m sure.

Since these so-called archeologists know the motivation of WHY long dead people did things, they should be able to tell us this, too.
