Just in time for Saint Patricks Day two construction workers in Holland have discovered a real-life pot o gold.
The workers from water company Oasen made the stunning find when they were laying pipes in the new town of Hoef and Haag, in the province of Utrecht, LiveScience reports.
During the construction work, they dug up a medieval cooking pot that contained 12 gold and 462 silver coins. The coins have been dated to the 15th century. It's unclear at this point who will keep the coins.
After finding the pot, "it literally and figuratively rained coins," the company explained in a press release translated via Google Translate.

Gold, when melted down, is virtually untraceable - the banker guy in Goldfinger.
He, heh - you said “laying pipe”, heh, heh.

The numismatic value is only what the market will bear, and would take a while to achieve. People would be asking all sorts of questions, trying to ascertain the coins’ authenticity, since there are many fake coins, though made of real gold and silver................
Yes, that the good part about it..................
In the UK, it goes to the sovereign, under the assumption it was illegally hidden.............
Fortunately, The U.S. Constitution does not acknowledge “sovereigns.”
UMM no, as coins, they have far more value.
kudos!
When I read of something like this I always wonder what happened to the person who hid it and why they could not come back for it.
bump....
No, melting down 15th century sovereigns would be retarded. Here’s why.
There would be no problem whatsoever selling them as-is, and once they are turned into an unregnizeable blob of metal, that in turn would need to be assayed. When dealers purchase bullion it is bought at a very steep discount to gold price because of that.
Overall a good problem to have though. The stash represents somebodies life savings btw. Always a wonder what happened, why didn’t they return to get it. It’s cute their government has this “well they were trying to hide it, so it’s obviously ours”. What a bunch of wankers.
Looks like they cleaned up beautifully.
If it was me that found this, it wouldn’t be in the news, I can tell you that.
Shoot, shovel and shut up.
Thanks Red Badger. Nice find!
Senior year in high school, working at a local supermarket, I was on carriage patrol.
I noticed there was a pocketbook in a carriage I picked up. So I took it to customer service. Turns out it belonged to a woman that worked at the market and she just won on a scratch ticket - $1200 in cash in an envelope, right there in the bag.
Bitch never said thank you to me or even offered to get me a glass of water.
Lesson learned. After that, whenever Ive found anything, I turn in it. Turn it into my pocket.
“...Last thing to do is to tell a European government what you found....”
Last thing to do is tell ANY government...
They take enough out of your life as it is.

Going to ANY authority with it is .... purely stupid.
Sorry bout that.
My friends that worked together with me at that market discussed that when we were together during the holidays. Its one of those Remember when...? stories.
Yep, I remember the woman well. Not even a thank you.
Some lady dropped her keys once in line at a store, I picked them for her and dangled them playfully in front of her baby who was very interested in them, and she snatched them out my hand and gave me a look that said “You White folks belong in a concentration camp”.
