In earlier versions of Idol did viewer votes only start at the top 14? They’re dumping 5 out of 12 this week and the same next week so only 14 will be “in” the voting.

Looking at the current contestants it looks like the judges have set up various “interest group” candidates (country, rock, R&B, Pop, etc.) including the tranny market before a single vote from America is registered.

For me, I just love seeing raw talent first introduced and then honed and perfected - I do believe they work hard with their candidates but to lose so many promising candidates without an audience vote is disappointing.

Of course, I cannot remember what I had for breakfast yesterday so I could be wrong here. ;-)

Awesome, thanks for this cheat sheet!

You’re welcome. I used to do them in the older threads and was reminded we needed one when Jonny mentioned having to do one. I know he spends a lot of time on his intros, so I wanted to help.

Yaelle, do you find this new American Idol to be a bit off somehow. Am I just too used to the old American Idol?

Careful Yaelle, that might be the next reality show! lol

I also meant to tell you that I agreed with you that Ryan has a nice voice. How we never knew that before?

Had it muted as I cannot stand Levin’s voice. Worse than chalk on a chalkboard.

Agree that Levin has THE WORST VOICE IN RADIO.

Agree with you both! I change the channel.

Oh, I don’t think she is faking. And it’s ok to allow a talented kid with autism to get in, based on talent, and maybe with some aids he or she needs (like when they helped the blind contestant around the stage). But one doesn’t need to patronize. Truly the sister of Dixie was better than crazy Catie.

Yes, I do have one son with very highly functioning autism. Life is much harder for him but he is a genius and a great person. And horrible to raise! Glad that part is over! Lol. Parents of kids with brain disorders have it hard. None of those kids score less than an 11 on the scale of parenting difficulty.

Well, I think Jonny would agree, the more recent incarnations of Idol were also “off somehow” so nothing surprises me now. Don’t you gentlemen remember (and I know you do) the wars of the Divas with Mariah Carey’s boobs fighting for superior position over Nicki Minaj’s butt cheeks? The growing PC, the silly tricks to keep the show popular (so far pretty unsuccessful)?

I will give the show and the voters one thing. Scotty McCreery is turning out pretty well. I cry every time I hear his song “5 more minutes.” And do you think I cry to the verse about the dying grandpa? No, I’m so weird I cry over the football verse. And I feel stupid in the car wiping away a tear when (believe it or not) I was not a youth football champ.

Without going back and looking it up, I thought they weeded it down to top 24. 12 men and 12 women, before the viewers got to vote. But, I could be wrong on that. I just don’t recall it being 7 of each when they started letting viewers vote.

Having said that, in the past they always did an even amount of men vs women. This year that might be different since eliminating 5 each week ‘could’ give us more of one sex over the other.

With the first eliminations we have 4 men and 3 women. If next week we get 4 women and 3 men, then I will think it is staged. I’m curious to see if they continue changing the format.

I’m wondering if they will combine them and have them all do their performances in one night and have results the next night. In the past, they had it where the men performed one night and the women performed the next night and the results were a third night. At least until they whittled it down a bit. I’m wondering if they just did the whittling on their own without letting viewers vote.

I don’t like that they didn’t let viewers vote, but I suppose its their way of not only stacking the deck, but making sure the freaks get more air time.

They have had some successes and some minor ones, but somehow the show just seems lackluster. Is it because the show no longer seems to want to apply to all members of the family and now seems geared towards the young teen to 30 year olds?

The past few years and this one, they have very few artists that we recognize. Sure they have Lionel Ritchie and Sugarland. It seems they are not really trying to appeal to the wider audience.

The really hot artists go to the Voice. I think Idol has a more tattered reputation. Though both Luke and Katy are in the same sellout tours, platinum record category still.

I have nothing but fondness for Seacrest. I never believed, cannot believe, he would harass a woman. Sorry. It must have been a misunderstanding. All the radio hosts I’ve listened to on KFI, some for many years, have nothing but good things to say about their neighbor in the building. And you know radio people can be catty. They all seem to love him.

Levin? No, he doesn’t put me to sleep. A soft deep voice like George Noory calmly discussing alien invasions or ghosts in the basement, puts me right to sleep. I’d toss and turn if I had to hear Levin’s Screeching all night!

From Wiki: Audience voting

It looks like at one point voting was on the top 24 but it varied over the seasons.

I watched early episodes from the beginning but was disgusted when they highlighted the truly bad contestants early on. It seemed a waste of time and ridiculing less than talented contestants.

They got better at showing actual talent and I became a fan again somewhere around season 6 but I rarely vote except for Leo Dewyze and Hailey ... whatever that season was. Thanks for your help.

I usually voted. I remember voting a lot for Carrie Underwood, Diana DeGarmo (she should have won over Fanscrechia. I voted most every season. I missed the first season and didn’t watch much of the last two seasons.

It will be interesting to see how they handle this season.

I agree, Yaelle. One of the nicest guys in the business. I love Seacrest and don’t for a minute think he harassed a woman. In fact I don’t even believe he likes women.

Everyone says Ryan is super nice and humble.

I agree he sets off my gaydar. Any man with a smile that big. Even if he is bi, he just would not be a hands on harasser. No way. Now Lionel... lol.

Good summary on nature of show. Did enjoy the duet artists as I was not aware of several of them. The PC nature of the selections wears old after awhile. Also, watch the voice so tainted by the the semi pro nature of the contestants and range of their abilities. 9/10 of my idol interests are in this thread. Jonny’s intros, and the comments by posters. Do miss MagUSNretired’s snarks but Yaelle has certainly filled in well in that regard
