Ive been missing the vast amount of information on prepping, survival, camping, simple cooking, the old ways of doing just about everything all the things nw_arizona_granny knew so much about and shared with us, along with numerous other posters with a vast array of skills and knowledge.
We have our various related-threads here, a recipe thread, a gardening thread, and even a prepper thread. They are all great and I dont mean to take anything away from those and the hard work their owners put in.
But I was missing a place to talk about ALL those things, to get the camaraderie that we used to have on grannys thread.
I learned how to can on those threads! The pressure canner was not my friend, I thought, but I bought one and stared at it for a month, intimidated. Then I read the directions for another month. But with the help and encouragement of posters on grannys threads, I jumped in and now have my very own food storage room in the basement with lovely jars of shelf-stable meats, vegetables, and fruit. When we moved, I fashioned my food storage room and insisted upon having a basement from what I learned on her threads. Getting started gardening was from her threads. Making my own cleaning products
.the list is endless.
So I thought I would take the chance and start another comprehensive prepper thread and see how it goes. I used to have grannys ping list since I made one of the threads for her, but alas, with numerous computer changes, I cannot find it. So please pass this onto any posters you think might be interested.
Well just keep it running until..whenever. Granny created a new thread at 10,000 posts or so. I do like the idea of having ONE thread to go to because often I cannot find or keep track of the weekly threads. I wont be posting lots of recipes or tidbits myself to any mods concerned about the size of this thread. Id just like a place to chat, post questions, post ideas, make new prepping friends.
Here are grannys threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

You don’t split them for fence, you cut them to length (8’ or so). They make excellent corner posts, same as old railroad ties.
Please add me. I miss the prepper threads.
Yes, please keep me on the ping list and thank you.
The ping every so often works for me......
The ping every so often works for me......
sure thing, LL
Please include me. Thank you.
You’re on!
Keep them at room temp and theyll last quite some time. Just check them visually to make sure they havent cracked. I got some from my mom that must have been 20 years old. They sealed just fine and have been on my shelf for 8 months. Just ate some pea soup we put up.
Delicious.
L
you betcha! It wouldn’t be the same without you ;)
“I just hope this doesnt turn into another valiant but futile attempt to download every recipe off the Internet, though.”
LOL, no. That’s why in the intro I said I wasn’t going to be posting a lot of recipes ;) I didn’t want anyone to get nervous about that.
But this one is for you then!
Lentil Barley Soup
3/4 cup chopped onion
3/4 cup chopped celery
1 clove garlic, minced
1/4 cup butter
6 cups water
28 oz tomatoes, cut up
3/4 cup pearl barley
6 bouillon cubes
3/4 cup lentils, rinsed
1/2 tsp rosemary, crushed
1/2 tsp oregano, crushed
1/4 tsp pepper
1 cup thinly sliced carrots
1 cup shredded swiss (opt)
In 4 quart Dutch oven, cook onion, celery, and garlic in butter till tender. Add water, undrained tomatoes, lentils, barley, bouillon cubes, rosemary, oregano, and pepper. Cover and simmer for 45 min. Add carrots and simmer for 15 minutes more or till just tender. Ladle into soup bowls and top with cheese.
I skipped the cheese and it was really good. I’m trying to put more barley into my food storage because I LOVE it! I bought some from Yoders, a local Amish store - SO cute! - and will mylar it shortly.
A suggestion for the ping list, if I may.
Put it in alphabetical order.
I inherited the homeschooling ping lists and they weren’t in alphabetical order and there were a whole bunch of duplicate names. If someone thought they weren’t on when they were, you’d have to read the entire list to see. If they are alphabetical, then it’s FAR easier to find out if someone is on already.
And it’ll be easier to start it that way then to go back and rearrange it later. Trust me on that one.
Now, that would be a complete protein meal, wouldn’t it?
Or not?
lj, what do you say.
And I’m still trying to think of a name for the thread you want to start for eating meatless but nutritionally complete.
Aside from *Eating Meatless and Healthy* or something really original and creative like that, I’m at a loss.
Aw, shucks......

East Tennessee Appalachian Granny ;)

btw, i didnt use bullion cubes but 2 quarts of canned stock, one ham and one turkey. I always have too much turkey stock (hubby doesnt like it) so i disguise it when i can.
but for some inexplicable reason, when i started prepping i thought i needed to put bullion cubes in mason jars with oxygen absorbers. i still have then and they are dated 2008....wonder what they are like now....
What a great idea to do this thread! I have been looking for information like this...
Thanks for posting some previous threads too :)

Hope all is well in your neck of the woods!
The weekly garden thread welcomes all questions on Hobbies, most especially anything along the lines of homesteading basics, food storage, and preparing for emergencies. We’ve even discussed knitting, but the more threads the better.
I’m thinking self sufficient as possible is the way to go these days and the future, so I’m in.
