I’ve been missing the vast amount of information on prepping, survival, camping, simple cooking, the old ways of doing just about everything – all the things nw_arizona_granny knew so much about and shared with us, along with numerous other posters with a vast array of skills and knowledge.
We have our various related-threads here, a recipe thread, a gardening thread, and even a prepper thread. They are all great and I don’t mean to take anything away from those and the hard work their owners put in.
But I was missing a place to talk about ALL those things, to get the camaraderie that we used to have on granny’s thread.
I learned how to can on those threads! The pressure canner was not my friend, I thought, but I bought one and stared at it for a month, intimidated. Then I read the directions for another month. But with the help and encouragement of posters on granny’s threads, I jumped in and now have my very own food storage room in the basement with lovely jars of shelf-stable meats, vegetables, and fruit. When we moved, I fashioned my food storage room – and insisted upon having a basement – from what I learned on her threads. Getting started gardening was from her threads. Making my own cleaning products….the list is endless.
So I thought I would take the chance and start another comprehensive prepper thread and see how it goes. I used to have granny’s ping list since I made one of the threads for her, but alas, with numerous computer changes, I cannot find it. So please pass this onto any posters you think might be interested.
We’ll just keep it running until..whenever. Granny created a new thread at 10,000 posts or so. I do like the idea of having ONE thread to go to – because often I cannot find or keep track of the weekly threads. I won’t be posting lots of recipes or tidbits myself – to any mods concerned about the size of this thread. I’d just like a place to chat, post questions, post ideas, make new prepping friends.

I love that idea of the little countertop ice machine! If I didn’t have a second refrigerator in the basement with a spot for ice cube trays and a bin to store them in, I would go for that. Those automatic icemakers in frig’s don’t make the ice fast enough, nor big enough for my ice bag.
Cool, then it’s like they’re doing a wave!
You should check it out and head up there, not that far from you. I understand that it’s gotten so popular that there’s a lottery for parking, though, so you’d need to plan ahead and contact the park service.
That ice machine there have been some negative reviews so would be a tad hesitant to actually buy one just yet.
Sounds as though there might be several bugs to adjust before making any decision.
ICE MACHINE
The Smokies must be beautiful. Family ancestors moved from Tennessee to Texas long before mom saw the sparkle in dad’s eye. Only once have I been in that area, which unfortunately we drove thru at night and very little was seen. My granddad, God rest his soul, and grandmom did visit one summer coming home with some beautiful photos and slides. Sister has those now. Slides! LOL who still has slides? or uses the viewer/projector to actually view them. The projector bulb is burned out, the viewer is broken and the only alternative would be a professional hired to reproduce them into photos. Perhaps one day...
Some areas are impressive, even rugged but the general feeling is like a comfortable embrace. Feels safe to me for some reason. Maybe it’s some sort of genetic memory, I have a few Cherokee ancestors and that is their ancestral home. I love going there.

Indeed. We have 25 gallons of bottled water under the bed in the spare room. The corner of the closet in there holds a dozen #10 cans of dehydrated food. Hardly takes up any space at all.

I got one of those ice machines about 2 months ago and it works fine!
Thanks for your feedback. Good to hear a positive! These don’t seem too expensive, but pennies are pennies and an ice maker would be nice to have. :-) The one in our frig has passed on and there is no resurrecting it.

Same here. Mom’s family. Dad was 100 percent German (his parents and grandparents came to America from Odessa, Russia.
Doubt the nerves would allow any mountain driving. Though mountain roads never seemed to be an issue, as the years pass by, subtle changes suddenly appear. Even the drive to Oklahoma and Willamenihia lodge was impossible. We had to turn around and go the long route out of the mountains.
Embarrassing, especially as a child the trip up Pike’s Peak was considered an amusement park ride (even with a big truck meeting on the narrow road going the opposite direction! Yikes!
Weird, the reviews are all over the place. Yeah I don’t need one anyway, I have an extra freezer in the basement. And I prefer the great big ice cubes that come out of the ice cube trays. They stay colder a lot longer in my ice bag.

It’s a strange secret world that they inhabit, with no small amount of danger. There’s a much larger predator firefly that fakes the males into thinking it’s a potential female mate, drawing him down to the ground to be eaten.
There’s much the human race might learn from other families and species. In some ways we no different than they.

We did, too. And will be first to confess when captured, we put the lightening bugs in a jar. Now, that might have been a terrible idea considering how little we see them these days.
LOL after Christmas each year the neighborhood kids rounded up all the tossed aside Christmas trees, pulled them home on our bikes and pitched them into the next door neighbor’s fort. We played king of the mountain for the next few weeks. It’s a wonder we never poked our eye out. :-) Summer evenings we sat on a quilt in the front yard, listening to radio (transistor radios just introduced) gossiping, star gazing, and watching the world go by. Summertime! Ah!
