Some areas are impressive, even rugged but the general feeling is like a comfortable embrace. Feels safe to me for some reason. Maybe it’s some sort of genetic memory, I have a few Cherokee ancestors and that is their ancestral home. I love going there.

Same here. Mom’s family. Dad was 100 percent German (his parents and grandparents came to America from Odessa, Russia.
Doubt the nerves would allow any mountain driving. Though mountain roads never seemed to be an issue, as the years pass by, subtle changes suddenly appear. Even the drive to Oklahoma and Willamenihia lodge was impossible. We had to turn around and go the long route out of the mountains.
Embarrassing, especially as a child the trip up Pike’s Peak was considered an amusement park ride (even with a big truck meeting on the narrow road going the opposite direction! Yikes!
